Sun tunnels

Hi,

We are thinking of adding some sun tunnels to our roof to get more light into an internal room (4x4 m). Do people find them effective or would it be cost prohibitive? Our architect is suggesting that we add opaque glass around one of the doors leading into the internal room but I am not convinced? We have cotswold stone tiles on the roof.

I used one in a utility room which had no windows. It was set into a flat roof and the transformation was amazing, the room has gone from being cave like to a light filled space, would recommend.

Hi, Craig -- it's true that a sun tunnel is cheaper, however it really is very different to having a velux, which lets in a huge amount more light. And there is nothing like actually being able to open it, as even the best roof extractors aren't that powerful. It does depend on what kind of sun tunnel, how big it is, etc; if it is to have clear or frosted glass, however if it is possible for you i would absolutely consider the velux.

Hi Emily, I recently had a Velux 14” rigid tube one installed in my shower room which has no windows. It is brilliant and lets in plenty of light even on an overcast day. The light fitting gives a similar level of light at night. The cost depends a lot on the amount of tube needed - mine was £450 from roofing superstore who were really helpful and gave lots of advice. I can’t say about fitting as it was part of a bigger job, but was apparently easy for my builder to fit within a day and wasn’t done as part of re-roofing. Interesting, thanks. The room faces north with a lovely valley view but its in line with the roof apex so I am only going to do it if I can get it on the south slope. It's a bungalow too so hopefully not too long a tunnel! I will keep this in mind though... :)

Personally, I prefer a bright kitchen and dark TV area - no glare and relaxing cozy darkness. If your table is an issue, there's some cool multipurpose table ideas on Houzz and Pinterest, like the fold up table attached. A bench under the TV could be pulled out to seat 3, if your couch was raised slightly to 50cm seat height, it could be used for dining, tub yptype chairs are suitable for both sitting and eating. A pull out island would give extra work surface or a high dining island.
