Staircase renovations

Hi all

We're about to renovate our house and wondering what we can do with our existing staircase for under £5000. I wanted to go for a look like this

I.e. white risers, ash oak treads, glass rails and lights.

My existing stair case looks like this

Stairbox has some nice looking stuff! Would my regular builder be able to fit these? I'm surprised at how well priced they are compared to the £8-£10k quotes I was getting earlier!

Good morning Emanuel. Thank you for the picture! It is easier to recommend something when we can see the actual staircase. For your steps and risers, I recommend using our stair cladding parts as you can install them over your existing steps and risers (they are extremely easy to install). You can go for a walnut or white oak timber/colour. The newel post, handrails and spindles don't look too bad so it is up to you if you want to change them or not. It would look better if you changed them. You can renovate them with a stop chamfered design, or you can even go with a glass design (which seems to be the preferred solution for staircase renovation in 2016). Because we have this competition going on, I would suggest that for now you place a small order (maybe buy the cladding products) and then, if you win, you'll be able to get the other stair parts for free. Here is one of the projects where we used our stair cladding parts with our glass panels.

Move the stairs so they run alongside the utility wall - replacing the bathroom space. Then you get a hall from the front entry giving direct access to the kitchen. Hall storage can fit under the stairs near the kitchen. Upstairs, I would utilise the old stairwell and landing as ensuite and walk through wardrobe for the master bedroom., if you can sort out drainage ( you may be able to run it down to the downstairs hall and box it out) Expand the old w/c into a bathroom - you may be able to extend the bathroom over the stairwell a bit, if the downstairs stud is high enough. Wow - I can see that you have some lovely ideas - however, if you want to design this sort of renovation yourself, you will need to research building regs to make sure your plan is compliant (as they are mandatory here in UK, not optional) - also I’d suggest you look up fire regs too as you will need to protect your family’s route out in the case of an emergency. Then I’d suggest you research opening sunrooms into the main part of the house that will be under thermal values part of building regs and then look into walkway spaces required in a kitchen and space required infront of an appliance and then look at informal planning guides for distance of table to wall and best equation for choosing the right size tv for the distance away you’ll be seated. Add to that some knowledge of the heat produced by the gas fire and how heat rises and there for it might melt your tv which would be a fire risk. ... Hope I haven’t bored you with all that ! With a little bit of research and some drawing changes - maybe a few more days required . Then it will be lovely AND safe for you and your family !

Hi everyone, Just wanted some advice on my entry staircase. I wanted to stain the stairs a darker colour but I’m worried that the stain won’t be even when it’s applied. You can see there is a landing strip where the carpet once was and either side the wood is lighter where it had gloss paint. I have sanded using a circular sanding machine starting with 40 grit then 80 and finally 120. Not sure what to do now I’m not even sure what wood the treads are. HELP! Please 🙏🏻

If you're having quotes from carpenters then yes you'll pay the premium. However, if you can order yourself and then get a carpenter to fit, you'll save money. I'm not sure about a general builder fitting staircases, Yes for bog standard ones, but dare i say it, that you might need a little more finesse for a quality product!

Depending upon the exact specification you could probably get a purpose made stair for about £5k
