Have sloped yard facing LA Basin... Need similar design...

What size are the timbers? Are they pressure treated or plain wood?

Hi Troy,

We used pressure treated landscape timbers 6"x6"x8' with 1in rebar to construct these terraced pathways, stairs, seating areas, vegetable garden, orchard and at the very bottom a Tai Chi Pad. Clients had no idea we were also addressing this "unusable" hillside as part of their whole property design and were quite excited when we presented our ideas. This is now a favorite part of their new "Outdoor Lifestyle".

I never, or should I say my husband, hasn't, got round to finish tiling behind the wash basin so we used a 'washable wallpaper' and it drives me mad everyday. It never ceases to surprise me how much toothpaste, soap etc gets splashed against the wall and no matter how much I wipe it, it always leaves little marks which are impossible to get off without damaging the surface. If I could, I would tile every last inch of the bathroom. A quick spray and wipe and it always looks clean. I feel like I'm doing an indepth scrub constantly and it still never looks quite as pristine as I would like

Everything Jonathan says is correct. You have to factor in the prep for the room. Removing tiles re-doing the water pipes, chasing them in to the walls etc. Then the re-tiling. The labour is the biggest budget usually. We went for rectified porcelain...........not for the faint hearted. Nasa would have a problem drilling through those. So, yes, as above choose the tiles carefully. Our bathroom is roughly the size of yours without the corner missing. So, take 25% off the tile cost of the tiles:- The tiles were £1500 ( wall and floor ) - The wall tiles are 900mm x 450 the floor tiles are 1200 x 300 Bath - half price £695 Shower - half price £299 Toilet - full price £450 Vanity Full price £699 Bath taps £300 Basin taps £150 Shower valve £150 Shower head and arm £150 Shower spray hose and head £150 Aquapanel £95 Tile adhesive £95 Coloured Grout £45 Total cost of purchases £3,278 We ( the wife - my labourer and I ), took down two walls, moved a doorway, put one wall back up. We re-routed all the pipework, central heating, hot and cold feet, chased pipes in to the walls etc. The whole thing took 3 weeks and I had a tiler friend help me for 3 days. Plus on top of that I had a plasterer in for the weekend for £400. Thus we only paid £1200 for the labour. If I had charged for my labour - plus mate for say 2 weeks, ( not three - as I wasn't working flat out ) instead of doing it for free it would have cost a further £2,500. Total labour should have been :- £3,700 plus the purchases £ 3,278 = £6,978 The bathroom is a luxury bathroom, so yes it's at the higher end of the market, but you can see how things mount up. Even when you try and save on the items going in, it's still the labour that gets you. A bathroom is a horrible, job, i'd rather do a kitchen any day and that's bad enough.

Hi ED, Thanks! Yep the eye of faith is crucial with winter garden makeovers! It'll be loads more plant dominated in a year or two. There's already a pump in the pond, which works as a standalone fountain, but can be adapted to power a cascade on the wall behind. We're having all sorts of whacky ideas like building a 'marble run' style sculpture incorporating all our favourite things, (archaeology, sci fi etc) or a commissioned metal sculpture that looks like a steel version of Virginia creeper.

Amazing suggestions so far, thank you so much! The house is three stories high at the back, so painting anything out of reach isn't manageable at the moment unfortunately. Also, we're in a deep valley, and the yard is west-facing. In mid-summer it's nice and sunny all day, but in the winter it gets far less sun but a lot of wind! This is partly why bamboo isn't really a long-term option as it won't withstand the great British weather (and why only one of the bamboo'ed gate has survived since last year!). The ivy was attached over the bamboo, because it only cost £10 and provided some 'greenery'. I cable-tied it onto the gate as a short-term measure after the bamboo fell off. As this is our only outdoor space, and there is no street parking at all (very busy main road at the front of the house), then we do need to keep parking available as we'll be looking to sell and move on in the next few years. I hadn't thought of outdoor rugs though - brilliant idea! Perhaps with a few planters on wheels and rugs, the patchy concrete will be adequately disguised. After measuring up outside and taking photos, I wondered if a small pergola attached to the house and the brick wall might be an idea? That would also give somewhere to attach a shade too, and a swing seat (thus solving the seating/shade option in one go). I painted the gates last summer, with hammerite, and it took forever! So, they'll be staying that colour for the foreseeable I think 😆. I'd like to attach something to the inside of the gate that's opaque. Maybe featherboard? What it looks like from the outside is of absolutely no concern to me, as that's not the bit we'll see (nor is it overlooked by any windows/other gardens, so it's only passing walkers who would see it).
