Bathroom concerns in a basement

Will this be costly and more so will it create damp, we realise that a saniflo can cause problems and would prefer proper drainage with waste and water.
Any suggestions are very welcome.

If the existing drains are lower than this bathroom then the fact it is a basement makes no difference.
I have had Saniflo and my only issue is noise which can be reduced by surrounding them with insulation.
Lastly I wonder if it is worth swapping the location of the bedroom and living area as it seems to me that a living area can be open to above but a bedroom relocated to the top of the plan need not be open to above as it would have light from windows.

Thanks for the advise Jonathan, we have since had further discussions of having no bathroom in the basement. We are liking the idea of having a more open plan layout in the basement and making a large living space with a cinema area, because the ceilings are quite low.
Thanks for letting me know about the noise aspect.

No thanks - I prefer to keep my privacy. No one needs to see their partner cutting their toenails or tweezing that stray hair of their chin. I stayed in a hotel in Athens where they had a glass wall between the bathroom and bedroom. They had curtains that closed to cover the wall and I did wonder whether they had had to install them because so many of their guests had complained.

Hello All, Thank you for all your comments! It's great to see how important these factors are to people (especially as this 'Old Age' shenanigans will be experienced by all one day!) With regard to the height of the toilet - the lady in question is in her late eighties, and we worked with her at each stage of the remodel, she tested the height of the toilet to make sure it was exactly where she wanted it and where she felt comfortable (the same with the grab handles). We also put the basin on a reinforced frame, so that she can use that as support, if needed. I think it must be the angle of the photograph as there is plenty of room to manoeuvre between the WC and the shower screen. Concealed cisterns are great for a project like this as they are such a space saving design. Using a reliable and recommended brand such as Gerberit puts your mind at ease that nothing should go wrong - especially if you use skilled plumber/tradesmen. Obviously nothing is perfect, which is why if anything should (and it is rare that it does go wrong) they come with a 25 year guarantee. You will also find that a maintenance hatch might be useful, and cause less stress if anything should go wrong. We have been fitting these types of systems for well over 20 years now and (*touch wood*) have not had a single problem! Importantly - Concealed cisterns and wall hung WC's provide the ideal easy-to-clean, and extremely hygienic surface. There are no obstacles to clean around or cisterns to clean under, just uninterrupted floor space, which can be cleaned easily in one go! For a project like this, one of the biggest advantages of concealed cisterns that are coupled with wall-hung WC's is that the user can adjust the height of the toilet to suit their particular height requirements. So often, floor-standing toilets don’t accommodate very tall, short or elderly individuals, making them uncomfortable to use. Other advantages are, of course, aesthetics, noise reduction, environmentally friendly, they can take more weight and are therefore stronger, you have a lot more design freedom in planning a space, finally they are state of the art, and more durable nowadays. The shower seat is not fixed, so she is able to move this in and out with ease! Having lived with the original bathroom for about 50 years our client wanted a change! She wanted a very clean, modern, bright, and un-cluttered space. She didn't want anything on show, and wanted to walk in to a serene and soothing space! She has a lovely vase of bright flowers on the window sill, as a finishing touch and that's as far as the 'accessories' go (I did spot some orange towels, so that gives a splash of colour!) Thanks for all the great ideas guys! Just had the builder to view the flat and here are some updates: builder said the soil pipe seems to be straight down, but could install a pump to flush it; although the estate agent said the pipe goes from external wall at the back of the flat. Not exactly sure who is correct. the budget is likely to go between 30k-35k. I also had a measure of the current bathroom dimension which is 1.67*2.13m. and the ceiling height is 2.56m. we'll probably change the bedroom wardrobe and free up some space as well...

I’d go with option two and a ceiling mounted shower head. They can be so much bigger than wall mounted, you can get a real rain shower effect which is very soothing. But definitely a shower screen, we are currently awaiting ours in various bathrooms and despite large shower sizes, the water does get everywhere.

Hi Jonathon,
I did find that our drains are located at a higher level, there at ground level. By the way I'm not a pro, I'm quite new to this houzz so don't quite know how it's appeared on my reply??
