Hi Alex! These are Eagleston Hollies. We have pruned them to "jewel shapes" at this property, but you can train them to take almost any shape. Good luck with your project!

I'm with eimearcahill, there is absolutely NOTHING tasteful about my Christmas decorations, it's excess everywhere. I did suggest when my daughters both got to their twenties that I might scale things back a bit but, after a reaction that could have earned them a walk on part in The Grinch who Stole Christmas, I realised that it was obviously very important that I spent the best part of a day turning the house into Santa's grotto :D I now have a granddaughter so I am resigned to many more years to come....

Real or Fake? What type of Christmas tree do you have?

We have one of each. The real on goes in the sitting room and is carefully decorated, all colour coordinated, and meticulously done by the wife. In the conservatory we have the fake one which is decorated by the kids - so it looks like a tinsel factory has exploded, baubles of all shapes/sizes/colours randomly bunched everywhere, flashing lights, tacky beads/bells. You can only make out a tiny bit of green tree under all the stuff (I absolutely love it, it's got so much character, but I'll still go in there any tidy it up a bit when the kids are in bed as most of it is only 'decorated' up to my waist height, so I do move some of it to the top 1/2 of the tree. Got to love the smell of a real tree as well

Hi Mike, Lots of options from cork panels to acoustic foam boards. Even ikea are doing them. There are hidden solutions i.e. sound absorbing plasterboard or visible ones where the panels become part of the decor. Cork panels as a feature: BUT... it's necessary to first understand how sound travels. I've seen some projects where home owners have added acoustic panels but noticed no change. Sometimes although it seems like the sound is travelling through the walls it s actually travelling through the ceiling or the floor! There are actually companies out there that specialise in working out acoustic problems for you, so if you can find a reputable one, that might be a good starting point.

Hi Gabby, I've chosen trees that will be low maintenance. The Acer silhouette is a narrow tree and grows to about 4 metres which is enough to provide screening without spreading or being too over-powering. I'm not sure about the Arbutus, I think it is going to be a few years before I have to think about pruning but I'm hoping it will grow upwards rather than outwards. If it does need pruning I'll speak to my neighbours and offer to cut their side of it. The other thing I considered was the benefits of evergreen trees, not only do they provide privacy all year round but they also won't cause alot of additional trips to the recycling centre in autumn to dispose of the leaves.
