Perhaps the description is better than the real thing! But..we love it..nearly everything in the house has been bought over the years 2nd hand so is certainly not "Posh" but well used & comfortable. Particularly today when we will be having a real mix (like the house) for lunch..millionaires & the homeless!! Oh! & us! These are all great buildings, but with the exception of the Shard, are all very traditional. Personally, I would like to see more contemporary examples: the Lloyds Building; Sainsburys in Camden, or my personal favourite, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the UEA outside Norwich. A very peaceful, calm and relaxing space.

Dear Esther Jury, thank you very much for such a detailed response. First and foremost, we think alike. My deck will definitely be at the same level of my window threshold. Given the practical reasons due to varying ground levels and also not to make it look too, how should I put it, stocky, I am going to have a floating deck. Think Frank Lloyd Wright cantilevered decks like the kind in his Falling Water house (can figure out my adoration for him from my moniker). I have researched thoroughly about woods, composites, value for price and have decided to go with Iroko. It supposedly ages into a beautiful dark brown. Today, my old architect suggested cladding with Iroko for retaining walls and steps. Very interesting idea. Have to explore the durability of the wood for such use. I too love my garden/forest. Can you believe I am 5 minutes from the City centre and I don't see a soul and have fox and their cubs bask in the sun on wintery morning and all types of birds floating about. It fills me with serenity and I am grateful for it and hence why I dwell so long on choices, so I get it right and don't take anything away from its beauty.

Hello ericah162, Where in the world are you or the house in question? I ask this as it may be nice to look at the environment before considering a colour, as it may dictate a style or colour.. Climate too.... With the style of house as per your image, it could work in a variety of ways... From a green grey should you choose to go dark which is gr8 with foliage! Equally too are earthy colours with hints of brown, browns and ochres.. If you really want to aim for a lighter scheme shades of stone and other off whites... One thing I would suggest is to consider texture! A textured facade is a beautiful facade.. Another idea of course is that you may have something architectural that can benefit from a more dramatic colour/finish thus picking out it's particular design... Perhaps mix materials for a dramatic aesthetic which always looks fabulous with foliage! Have a look at these and consider how they might inspire the decision process.. : )) Textured block (Frank Lloyd Wright) Beautiful in their design today as when they were built... All of them! (of course not all these are just cladding or render but they are meant to be inspirational and illustrate my suggested textural element) Concrete finish offers beautiful smoother but textured finish.. Textural render on a larger scale with wood as a second material Multiple, mixed materials.. I rather like the structural aesthetic here picked out in the stone. (this image is a bit small : (( )

Yes, this is clear, vertical grain Douglas fir. It is a plywood paneling.
