Hall and stairs design

We are extending and adding an upstairs
to a 1940s bungalow (doing pretty much all the work
myself). The house has no
period features, the feel is modern / minimalist.

The hallway isn’t dark but not bright, the front door has a large
window the Livingroom and kitchen doors also have glass panels there is a
large Velux upstairs.

Looking for some ideas for the stairs, the hall is 1800 wide and the stairs
have to meet Scottish reg's (900 wide). Regarding budget I would like to
do it as cheaply as possible, but am prepared to spend a decent sum of money as
we have no intention of moving. I would like something a bit
different that will not look dated in a few years.

I like the idea of Oak stairs with open risers (like the temporary set
in the picture) or with steel stringers. The issue is my
Girlfreind doesn’t like this because they’re "not safe" (no explanation why)!

Everything is as per the plans shown, although the new bathroom wall may
move back
slightly to give a bigger hall. The brick wall in the photo will be
comming down. The thick walls are the existing house. The Livingroom /
Lounge are open plan with the Lounge down one step. The new Bathroom
is on the same level as the existing house.

Basically a blank canvas, open to any suggestions, especially a DIY solution
that looks high end! With the exception of anything glass (fingerprints etc). Thanks
