Skylight: Curtains / Blind?

Hi All,

We created a light well in the main bedroom, as part of extending our ground floor flat. The lightwell creates a useful cove in the corner of the bedroom. opening approx 2m by 1.2m wide

I'd like to block the light off, A typical skylight blind wont work very easily as the opening mechanism has a metal piece that hangs down 20cm (and would definitely be expensive as a large / custom size)

I was thinking an elegant solution could be a curtain rail mounted on the inside of the cove, that would a) provide complete coverage and b) be virtually invisible when tucked away in the daytime. Thinking 1 single curtain would be the best there.

Any thoughts as to this could work, or other options?

Also any recommendations for thick curtains would be good?

A Bloc blackout blind might work ? As they have a grove that the edges sit in ?
Not sure about heavy curtains - sorry - I'm less 'soft furnishing' more 'practical space planner' !!

Thanks, are you suggesting that to cover the window (ie be fitted accross the lightwell), or the block the opening 'doorway'. If the former - Just thinking that the fixings might be ugly if 30cm from the actual windown? If the latter - its rather a big space for a single blind.

I would have roman blinds. As you say, you would have to have one curtain on each window and each curtain would have to stack on the chimney side. I think curtains need to be quite full and "drape" for this look to work. Either way you would loose some light. Another option is a roller blind but these look more utilitatian and loss of cosyness would be the compromise. I once saw another option but dont know the name for it. Four cafe type rods, one each attached to top and bottom of inner window recess. The rods are fixed so that they swing into the centre of the window and meet (blinds closed) or swing out and rest against the walks of the recess ( blinds open). Fabric is gathered onto to the top and bottom rods each side. Gives a cosy, cottage look with very little or no loss of light. You do need a fairly deep window recess for this to work. I saw a story on this once, which showed clips to hold a curtain from the vertical set up. I just did a search using the word clips to hang curtains from vertical blinds and it showed a few videos and some pinterest pins... a few more stories than the last rime I looked! . i think amazon US sold the clips ... there might be a few more sources these day...
