Do you prefer coloured door fronts for a kitchen?

Or do you prefer to be more plain and simple?

I like both. Depends on the house. I have Matt grey and they look great.

I think your instinct is spot on - the grey does not go with your lovely house at all! You said yourself, 'the grey craze', why follow the herd? Perhaps you should question why you want a 'contemporary colour' instead of one of the many choices which will enhance your beautiful period house. You don't see lovely pink Suffolk cottages, or the black and white half timbered houses characteristic of some areas daubed with grey because it's the latest fad.

Grey is my favourite colour right now, however I thin your door need a bit more depth to it. A deep burgundy or blue would make it stand out. I would suggest hanging baskets either side of the door complimenting the door colour too. Leave the door frames white though to match the windows. Good luck with your choice, I'm sure you'll pick a fantastic colour and love it!

Which way does the house face? If it faces south, I'd recommend using a paler colour so it doesn't absorb so much heat - and peel again quickly. I personally don't like black or anthracite doors as they just look like black holes. And grey is quickly going out of fashion so I'd not do a grey-grey either - a green like Sonia suggests would be good and fairly neutral for an exterior colour. Obvious colour would be to match the garage - at the moment, the garage is getting all the attention as it's a lovely bright colour whereas the front door just blends into the background. I wouldn't do the woodwork around the front door in the garage red - do the wood work in the same off-white as windows and just the actual door in red.
