Warm golden floor

The kitchen flooring looks like wood effect tile but the hallway does not. Can you please give the color and make of the hallway flooring. Thanks.

It is tiled throughout. It is a light grey colour, the lighting is a warm white and this is to help create a cosy atmosphere.

Unless Dulux have updated the formula, the Light and Space paints are more like a semi-opaque glaze, especially the satinwood paint. Bear this in mind when painting over any strong colours, it'll take multiple coats. Better to paint over with a one-coat white emulsion, or white primer for woodwork, ensuring you have full coverage before applying the Light and Space paint. Having said that, once the Dulux is on, it does look nice and bright, the woodwork has a sheen to it, rather than being flat.

Don’t do it I have fitted the system it does not work very well as output is only about 40/50w a m2 so rooms not warm enough. Also Matt is thin but wire going to it is thick. Connections to Matt are not good overheat and I don’t think will last. I have fitted many 240v systems and all worked well but these are between 150w/200w a m2 I would always go wet if you can. Whether you’re having a quiet Christmas or expecting lots of visitors and guests over the festive period, you’ll want to create a warm and inviting home. Thankfully, there are lots of ways to achieve this. Here’s our best tips for transforming your home into a cosy wonderland you’ll never want to leave. Adding a Christmas tree What home would be complete at Christmas without a tree covered in fairy lights and decorations? Most of us will opt to put at least one up this year, and whether it’s real or artificial, it’s a great start to adding that cosy festive feel to your home. Normally, adding a tree requires some furniture to be shifted around in your living space to make it fit, so don’t forget to add felt pads to the bottom of your tree stand and furniture before you move anything across the floor, to prevent any scratches or damage to your wooden floor. Welcoming guests to your home It’s traditional that family and friends call round to see each other at this time of year, so create a warm and inviting entrance to your home with outside decorations, lights and perhaps even a traditional Christmas wreath on your front door. Don’t forget to add a mat to the front door step too – otherwise you’ll end up with dirt or snow being walked in over your beautiful wooden floor in the hallway. Rustic cabin-feel to your décor There’s something very peaceful about the thought of staying in a remote log cabin with the snow falling outside, but for most of us we’ll be staying put at home this Christmas. That’s not to say that you can’t add this rustic-feel to your home décor though. Start with a traditional wooden floor in rustic oak, and layer it with thick deep pile cream or white rugs. Accessorize your home with lots of greenery and pinecones (also great for adding to wicker baskets as a centre piece too this Christmas!) Add some logs to the fire, grab some thick knit blankets and light some candles for a warm and inviting cabin-feel living space. Protecting your floor this Christmas A real Christmas tree is hard to beat, but it can cause havoc for your floors. Make sure you sweep up fallen pine needles every day so they don’t get embedded in your carpet or between floor boards and if you notice any sap on the floors try to clean it up straight away. The same applies to glitter from wrapping paper or new glittery Christmas clothes – the longer you leave it, the more it will end up everywhere. Many of us will enjoy lighting a few cinnamon-scented candles this Christmas but be careful you don’t allow any wax to drip on your wooden floors. If you notice any wax, leave it to set and get hard before you lift it off – it’s much easier than trying to wipe up a sticky, waxy mess.

Solutions to how to keep hardwood floors warm in the winter include: Place rugs in problem spots Add insulating weather strips to doors and windows Ceiling fans can help to reduce cold spots by circulating air Redirect air flow by replacing air vent covers with multidirectional grills Replace your curtains with triple layered interlined heavy blackout curtains Limit access to the room from entrances that open directly to the home exterior Let’s start from the beginning. We must consider the construction of the home (solid vs suspended flooring) and the type of insulation being used (e.g. foam board, fibreglass). Next we must consider the hardwood itself (e.g. Oak, Maple, Mahogany) and how to eliminate draughts and damp. Solid vs Suspended Flooring Solid floors consist of a concrete base topped with insulation and fibreboard. Suspended flooring places parallel rows of brick supports between the concrete base and the fibreboard layer. The difference between solid and suspended flooring is best illustrated as a small insulative gap vs a large insulative gap respectively. This significantly affects heat retention. While a correctly insulated solid floor will help a room to heat up relatively quickly, the wood floor will rapidly cool once the heat source is removed (as compared to the time taken for a hardwood floor to cool atop a correctly insulated suspended floor). Let’s take a look at how this affects the overall lifetime efficiency of solid flooring compared to suspended flooring: Solid flooring: 8-10 year cost effective period on heating costs Suspended flooring: 3-5 year cost effective period on heating costs A note on insulation: Phenolic foam is often used to insulate solid floor constructions because of its relative insulation efficiency – the thin synthetic material is used in conjunction with wood fibreboard to achieve a high performance while minimising the additional floor height. This material is also commonly used with suspended flooring, where wool or fibreglass is used between the joists. Hardwood vs Softwood – Choosing a Wood Floor Hardwoods have a high comparative density compared to softwoods. This higher thermal mass means that hardwood floors absorb, retain, and release heat over a longer period. Hardwood floors with a high thermal mass include Oak, Maple, and Walnut. Where possible, opt for solid wood floors (five eighths to three quarters of an inch thick) over engineered floors (a wood veneer glued to plywood). This will increase the cost effective longevity of the floor in terms of the number of times the floor can be sanded. How to Keep Hardwood Floors Warm Once we have considered the construction of the house (solid floor vs suspended floor), and we have selected the correct underlay, fibreboard, and hardwood floor to fit with both the house construction and your style preference, we move on to isolating and removing potential causes of draughts and damp (see list at top of page for pro tips). Remember, hardwood floors will retain heat for much longer than a softwood or carpeted floor. Smart use of sunlight could also help to keep hardwood floors warm in winter. Open your curtains during daylight hours to allow the wood to absorb heat from the sun. Be sure to close the curtains once the peak temperature of the day has passed.
