Design Dilemma Cleaning Tips

Roof lighting. How do you keep it clean?

I'm designing a house and thinking of having a roof light or light box in the flat roof extension in the dining room. Do they get dirty and look messy?

Make sure you get self cleaning glass, makes a huge difference.

Hi

As Victoria said, self cleaning glass does make a difference, but it only works best when the glass is at a 15* (or more) pitch. A Flat Glass Roof Light is installed at a 5* pitch, so yes, they do get dirty and will need cleaning every now and then.

This wouldn't be the case with a Roof Lantern as our system has a 25* pitch, which means the self cleaning glass works better.

Every day I give the bathroom a clean, I love shiny chrome and squeaky clean porcelain, if you keep on top of it it really only takes 10 mins max, including the floor tiles. Use disposable kitchen roll for your loo, and 2 glass cleaning cloths, one wet and one dry, for your porcelain and shower screen. Floor wipes are great, but steam cleaner is effortless. I think its really important to use a natural candle, scented or non scented, and not overloaded with scent either. The non natural ones are loaded with nasties!! you only have to see how they blacked the container, also not a good idea to use them when having a bath, the steam traps all the smoke under it so really you are breathing it in. Natural is really the clever choice, and they are not as expensive as you think, plus Soya wax burns slower :)

We live in the country and get a fair amount of critters of various sorts. We have a commercial electricutor thingy with a UV tube for flies, which worked well but we noticed that we were also getting a few bees and hoverflies, zapped. So we have stopped using it now and have been trying out venus flytraps this year with a fair amount of success. I feel the number of flies has been less. As to other creepy crawlies, being in an old house, we get a lot of spiders, they either get ignored or safely captured and evicted. Last summer, we had a swarm of hornets that used to pitch up about 8.00 every evening and literally swarm around at the windows attracted by the lights - it was really quite horrific. It was such a nuisance too, as we couldn't open any windows or doors in the evening but we didn't know where the nest was, so we couldn't get rid of it. But they seemed to have not survived last winter, so none this year. But we've been plagued with wasp this summer, we actually had 6 different nests around the outside of the house and we had to have the pest man out a few times - I think it cost us nearly £300 in the end for all the call outs.

How to keep the wall lights in the alcoves while adding the shelves?

As the two people above have suggested, you could definitely add in a subtle LED lights hidden under the shelves so you wouldn't know they are there - this is a great way of adding a glowing aurora to the room and just adding some extra ambience - that way you won't lose the light that you currently have in this area. Antique, speckled and distressed mirror panels are really proving popular at the moment, they are a great way to boost and reflect light around the room but also offer a subtle feature design. Again, you could add in some low warm white thin LED strips just so it offers some additional light and glow in that area. Do you have any images of the current lights/chimney set up as it currently is so that we can see what you have and come up with some more tailored ideas for you?
