Help with Facade Face Lift

Dear Houzzers,

I would be grateful if you could help me with ideas for modernizing the façade of my house (photo attached) .. I'm stuck for ideas how to bring it together as I have both ugly wood cladding and white in-fill panels between the Windows - ideally I would like to get rid of both!

It would be great to hear from anyone who has experience with a similar issue, or who could provide examples of some options to spruce it up.

Hi Ross,

I'm not sure how much you're looking to change but there is a lot you can do!

Wooden cladding is quite often used to update such exteriors, for instance the kind used in the following:

You could replace the doors and windows with dark grey or even black uPVC ones.

Alternatively, you could paint the window frames and doors in the same grey and remove the in-fill panels. Frosted glass sidelights create a modern looking entranceway. You could replace the light you currently have to the left of the door with one of a more contemporary design. Rendering the exterior and painting it white also seems to be a popular path taken when modernising exteriors from this period.

It's very close to beautiful already. Find out from your local nursery what can take the harsh afternoon sun and fill those beds! Or just fill them with more of the same. Put a few large plant containers ... terracotta, I think ... in a lovely urn shape, and plant them up with the same kind of plant in each. Three or four, depending on the length of this area. Plant them with something that gives you height (the same thing in each container). If you want colour, allow small areas among those low-growing plants for annuals, and swop them around each year. Just think what spaced-out patches of indigo petunias, or orange marigolds, could do to lift your heart.

I love that you moved the front door, it gives you a nice welcoming space to come home to and to greet visitors. Another few thoughts for consideration. The front of the main section of the house looks a little out of scale now because it's volume is so large and unbroken. What if you either painted the siding at the height of the garage door on down the color of the foundation under the porch, or removed that section of siding and replaced it with a stone facing? If the garage door was the color of this section or close to it, it would recede and allow the front entrance to stand out more. The face of the white part of the house would be in scale then. If you want to replace the garage door, you could go with a carriage door type, which would suit the style of your house. Your orange chairs on the porch are so much fun! Consider a fun color for the front too, maybe yellow? Some landscaping from the driveway along the steps would also draw the visitors eye to the front door. Your home is beautiful and you must be enjoying it very much!

Hi - to answer Tamp75 - basically when a DW is in a corner it means you can only stand to one side or in front to access it, which renders the wall units and corner work top ( I know there's no wall units in this kitchen ) in the corner impossible to reach, unless you have arms like MrTickle. When planning dishwashers you should always work with the image of them open in your mind and the knock on effect that will have . Often, in smaller kitchens the wall units are the bulk of the storage area, as the base cabinets spaces are often filled out with appliances of one sort or another, so by limiting access to your wall units you are compromising the efficiently of the kitchen. There can be also issues with the door opening and clearing projecting handles of the cabinet (s) on the other run - so you need an infill between the DW and the corner cabinet. You will probably get splashes etc on that cabinet door too, and as Amy said, problems getting it in and out for servicing ... It's just a last resort position ! Adding a sketch to illustrate ...

Like most have said, the lead strips are the remains of a porch. You could bring a porch back but using glass panes and wrought iron which would be in keeping with the house's period, you'd get the shelter and protection of the door from rain but not too obtrusive. There are corbels the porch could rest on. I'd go for wide angular stone steps to the front door, substantial and a statement. Perhaps match the stone to the quoins around the doors and windows? There'd be space for a pair of planters and maybe a keep-safe box for deliveries while you're out. The path/paving needs replaced, but don't have it hard up against the house otherwise it might affect the damp proof course. You could have some beds in front of the windows with low maintenance planting. As mentioned by others, a good landscaper can come up with something to suit your budget and how green your thumb is. I'd leave the facade as it is barring any repairs. Perhaps if the stone is cleaned it'll seem lighter. The stone is wonderful and probably cost a fortune when the house was first built. If you're in a conservation area there may be restrictions on what you can do. Changing the window frame colour would probably do fine. The front door needs stripped and repainted, again a lighter colour would work well. French grey perhaps?
