Advice please on new driveway for Edwardian country property.
Comments (9)You may be surprised to learn that you will need planning permission if you want to lay a driveway in an impermeable surface such as tarmac or block paving. http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/commonprojects/pavingfrontgarden/ Your choice will depend on your budget and the materials of the house (which you do not describe). My preference would be brick or concrete block paving. If you make this permeable the build-up can be substantial as there is a thick layer of granular material needed. The alternative is to drain the run-off into a swale (a shallow depression where it can gradually percolate into the soil) or other method of disposing of the water on site. I recommend a neural colour so the driveway fades into the landscape rather than stands out. Comments (29)Thanks mrsmcee74 for recommending Egyptian cotton, although I have used it before I hadnt really considered it for this room, it really looks great though - its in the part which is east facing, so your comments on that really swung it! Will post photos soon. Also, my painter was pleased as he loves Dulux trade - and something to note, it took only 2 coats of Dulux trade Egyptian Cotton, whereas the F&B lamp room gray took 3 it was so watery... I love the colours that F&B do, but the paint quality of dulux trade (not normal dulux) is much better....See MoreGeorgian hallway and landing redecoration
Comments (7)Hi. I may be wrong ( Internet not working properly!) but I believe Georgians only used silver grey, lead and slate grey shades but I'm not sure it would have been used for halls as i think they would have used more opulent colours for welcoming people as it's the first room you see.If you want authentic georgian colours have a look at Little Greene or Dulux Heritage but check their use. Popular colours I think were sage, blue and burgundy but obviously the georgian period was very long. My house is georgian and I've used little greene mid-lead on my kitchen cabinets so an authentic colour but I'm not sure it would have been used for that purpose! I agree with Cynthia though, you need the hall to work with rooms off of it etc. Again, I've painted my hall in stone ( farrow and ball elephants breath) which was a common colour but I'm not entirely sure it would have been used for a hall!! I would also recommend avoiding brilliant white shades for woodwork, it wasn't invented until around 70 years ago so doesn't seem to sit well in period houses....See MoreGeorgian office has become uninspiring dumping ground
Comments (22)Hi Karis, It would be good to see a plan of the room as the photos can distort perspective a little. I agree with you, the room does look a little off kilter. It's too heavy to the right of the fireplace -to balance it out you need something to the left (of the fireplace).- reflecting the height and width of the bookcase. One way you could achieve this is by using paintings or some kind of wall art above and slightly behind a chair. (small relaxing arm/reading chair would be ideal. A floor light in this corner even, if its only a plug in floor spot light will make a difference. Option A will also feel a little more balanced, but also a very tiny bit like the reception of some private practice. If the desk isn't too big, can you try turning the desk slightly diagonally into the room? Alternatively, position the desk where you had it originally and create a picture wall full of all the photos you love behind it (on the door wall). You will also need either a desk light either positioned on the desk or on the wall to give you the lighting you need, making your desk a pleasant place to work at. Hope this helps, please keep us posted. Annika...See Morewemajewska
