Fence Paint

Hi Sarah,

Hope you're well. Just wondering if this is the same paint (Obsidian) that I enquired about as it looks slightly darker and I think I prefer this one, Could you let me know where i could get this colour please? Also my garden is south facing and is very large would this colour look ok? Many thanks

Hi Annie, good to hear from you. This is actually a plain black paint which is also available from Sadolin. As your garden is naturally light and is quite large, I think this would be a great choice. Good luck with the project, Sarah

Thanks Sarah. I was told if I went with black the paint might blister as its a south facing garden. What do you think? I've currently ordered samples for RAL 7016 from Sadolin (I think), Urban Slate from Cuprinol and Obsidian, however I didn't realise it had a green tone to it which I don't think would suit the look I'm going for. the gardens getting there but very slowly :(

I always paint wood black in any garden I design. It cheers up tired fencing. Black is the colour of shadow and therefore fades into the background, making a nice foil for plants. Here's a link to a blog post about this. Blog Post 'Paint it Black'

Like what Daisy England said, though I get the reverse effect. The black looks rather blue for me against the grey. I like the effect though as if gives a more chic modern approach from what I can tell. I keep thinking though if it's just pure black or if you had to do a mix in there somewhere. Either way, this is going to my ideas.

Just remembered I promised to post an update once the fence was finished. Here it is. Excuse the state of the bushes etc, they need a bit of tidying up, and a few more shrubs / trees / plants addes, plus I made the mistake of letting my father in law loose with the loppers on the hedge in the corner - never again! Happy enough with the fence colour though, thanks for all your help.

If you are set on painting then go with a contrasting colour to the paving, a darker tone of grey for the horizontal slats. As for paint I would choose the Valspa decking paint from B&Q as this is much better wearing and seems to have a better coverage than fencing paints. Also this being designed for decks it does not need as much repainting as fence paint and to some degree be washed down. As for the fence around the lawn area it depends if you are planting around the borders or not. Whatever you do there the fence will go green under the overhanging foliage and will need to be cleaned on a regular basis. If it was me I would be tempted to leave it to weather naturally as once you start painting a fence, you will always be painting it to keep it looking good.

Hi Annie, glad to hear that you are making progress with the garden. I haven't experienced black paint blistering on fences but it might be best to avoid this colour if you have concerns. I look forward to hearing which colour you choose, best wishes, Sarah

Thanks Sarah, I'm sure if the fences are shaded it should be fine. I'm praying for the day it's finally complete and I can send you a picture. Fingers crossed it looks the way I imagine it in my head :)
