Can I fit in a kitchen Island?
Comments (8)Original kitchen becomes a utility/laundry room. I'll be doing an single storey extension out to the rear which would be a dining and lounge area with skylights. That rear window and wall would come down to create an open kitchen. What is labelled as the dining room would be a cosy living room with log burning stove. Fireplace in the new kitchen would be turned into a feature; perhaps housing a wine chiller and rack. Other option is to take out the centre wall with the fireplace, but I feel I shouldn't totally remove such original features and I like the idea of having a utility room. Though I should add I am aware of what supporting walls are (especially with fireplaces) and the complications with removing them....See Morehelp!! kitchen layout.. can i fit an island in
Comments (49)Dear Wombatchild The two double ovens are on that back wall. The distance from them to the end of the island is 2.6 mtrs. The bank of units is mirror imaged from the centre of the ovens and that means there are two slim pull out larder cupboards on that wall. That 2.6m means that they can be pulled out and it is still no problem for traffic to be flowing past. My hob is on the island itself and the extractor comes up through the granite when in use. That far end of the island is great for taking things out of the oven and checking on food ...... turning potatoes over etc... To the left of that bank of units is a door to my boot room so I need walk way space there. This thread is quite old now and I may be repeating something I typed earlier but I love my kitchen ( think it is about six years since I had it out in) ..... The only things I would have done differently would have been not to have stainless steel sinks as they are a devil to keep looking nice! And I would like more contemporary pendant lights over the island instead of those chrome chandeliers - can change them but still working on husband on that point!!!! Comments (7)Hi Mark, You've asked for two things - 1. The key to a new shower room is proximity to drainage. Have you considered partitioning off the left of the rear extension and connecting though to the waste in the kitchen? You could narrow the open doorway from kitchen to rear room to give you around a metre width. You'll need extraction to go outside as well, but perhaps this is easy through the side wall, depending on if it is a detached house or not. 2, Open plan could be done either by removing and putting steel beams in place of the wall between living and back room, or alternatively removing the wall between back room and kitchen and reconfiguring the kitchen to an open plan design. You will know better how you use the space, but having the kitchen open to the dining or living space is really popular and "party friendly"! I hope this helps! Comments (6)Sorry, I should have explained a little bit more. These are old units that I am simply moving. They are in very good condition. I have no problem with abandoning or not using some of the units. @ Jonathan that looks good. My intention is to get a 2400mm island as well. However, need to get these in first! @ Ellie I will do so when I have a chance a little later on! Thank you. The diagram I put up first shows the area where the units will go along with the window at the top. @rinq the larders are very tall. From memory they are approx 2.1m high. They both have openings of 1050mm for appliances. I havnt enquired about additional units but I'd much rather make the best out of what I have....See MoreUser
