Re design the lounge especially the chimney breast
Comments (6)Hi. I must admit this isn't something I would probably do myself as it may close the room in. However, I would go for a low wide fire so the tv can be hung low otherwise it may be uncomfortable to watch. Build a recess for the tv and use a textured wallpaper etc to make that the focal point (I would normally say something really dark to disguise the tv but it will bring the ŵall in if you did that). I'd go for handless cupboards to keep with the contemporary feel but also so it's less busy. I would have shelves above to retain a feeling of openness or mix and match open and covered as in pic 3. Move the mirror (or buy another large one) to the ŵall opposite the window as it is increasing the feeling of space. I can't find great pics so they're a hybrid of suggestions! Another option is to have an off centre fire closest to the window so the fire isn't obscured by the sofa....See MoreChimney Breast Decoration
Comments (14)Thank you everyone for your comments, it is really helpful. jprzym - our house is only 20 years old and is a modern bungalow. We are completely renovating the entire house so hoping to have a rather contemporary finish so this should work well with the overall look. I have looked in to wallpaper but I am not a fan of the wood/tile effect wallpapers thus far. I have a sample for a rough textured wallpaper that I don't mind.. but not in love with! sttop - really helpful to see the corner finish - and for assurance with practicality! I think perhaps getting a tiler in would be the best thing to do. Redecorate - there is some worries around this - the "chimney breast" we have isn't actually a real chimney breast, it's just been built out - would this make damage even more likely? I'll definitely check it out. I probably would only use the fireplace for decoration though! Jude - love the image you sent over - i will definitely check these out, thank you....See MoreHiding the Dreaded TV!
Comments (9)It's certainly not for everyone I agree but we do get clients wanting this as an option - I guess it is due to the fact that there is so much open plan living now and shared spaces needing to perform multiple functions. Tv's are also so huge now so you may want a lovely big screen but it takes over a bit when you're not using it and not everyone wants that....See MoreBiofuel fireplace and tv wall; Have you built one?
Comments (2)Hi Elizabeth Yes, it’s almost complete now. We just need to paint the vermiculite black, find and fit a mantel shelf, and tile the wall and returns. We didn’t use timber for the structure as I decided it would be safer in the long term to use metal stud work and we used 12mm cement board across the front for added safety. Inside, it’s lined with fire resistant Rockwool sound insulation which is wedged in between the metal studs as we found - just in time - that the sound from the tv can make the stud vibrate in an unpleasant way! As we are tiling, it isn’t skimmed but the advice is to not use any product containing gypsum. I think it’s less safe. There are A1 fire rated plastering products on the market. The returns and recesses either side are boarded with fire line plasterboards. This is what we have so far. I haven’t tried the fire year as it’s so warm, but look forward to the day when I can :)...See More- 7 years ago
