which paint type for brown banister hand rail?

new mdf banister, currently all white (dulux satinwood). Considering painting the hand rail and top of Newel post dark brown (as often featured on this site). Not sure what type of paint/stain to use. Can anyone please help. Will I achieve the look I want given it is painted MDF rather than solid wood? Thanks

Hi. Do you have a picture of what you mean? It sounds as if you want a varnished handrail and if so you won't achieve such a nice look with mdf as it doesn't have a grain

thanks for replying. something like the first photo, or even dark taupe (second photo) would work with our colour scheme. However, would I achieve the same kind of effect with paint or would it just ruin the banister? what do you recommend? Thanks

Hi @robert-jones53, I do have the details, he was local to Petersfield, Hampshire so depends on where you are located. We ordered all the parts from this company called Multi Turn, in Twyford. They supplied and delivered all the parts and then came out on-site to measure and template the glass! Hi - I wouldn't paint the fireplace or the mantel - particularly if it is the original, the fire surround tiling looks original possibly I can't tell from the pick. I would remove the picture rail completely, then I would build white cupboard doors and box in your book shelves then build a matching pair of door cupboards and and mount on the right handside of the chimney breast - wall mount your TV and satellite box etc on a tilting cantilever bracket with a shelf either above or below to store all your DVD's xbox games etc.. The doors are easy to make from MDF or tongue and groove, paint them white ( or cream and they will hide and safely store all your bits and pieces.) Choose hinges that you like to set it off. Then when you look at your fire place your eye will be drawn to it as a focal point, cosy in winter, lovely flower vase or plants when not in use, and by disguising any clutter and raising the eye level your room will look bigger too! - let us know what you do and post an updated pick !

I’ve touched on this subject before but want to present it to you again: Do you think painting these doors, of bathroom and separate toilet, in F&B’s Off Black would work? Also, would I need to paint the insides of the doors too?

Looks great :-) really like that wallpaper, as I did the first time you posted it as an option for your bathroom :-) Great little space, re the ceiling, I think it would look great painted the same colours as the walls if you wanted to change it! Looks good as it too :-)
