Piece of wood above front door

Can anyone offer advise please on how to fix this damaged piece of wood above the front door? I've filled in the extensive damage (bit better now than the pic) but want to make a smooth/even job and not sure of the best technique about from sanding.

Can you buy replacements? or would it have to be a custom job? Do these have a name?

Hi - you can buy replacement timber mouldings. The section you are you are looking for is a timber 'Cornice'. Check out Dresser Mouldings, here is a link to their cornice products -http://www.dressermouldings.com/products/mouldings/cornices.html

It is worth considering getting a joiner to carry out the work for you

Hi - in response to Carol's comment, I attach a photo of what we've done so far. We had the power company come in and move the meter down slightly (that was the bit on the left in the original photo above) and put it onto a smaller backplate for us. Then we had our electrician in to put in a new fusebox. Then we had our carpenter in to make a small box picking up the moulding on the inside front door, which also matches the doors leading off the hallway. We had the plasterer in to make good the area. So far that's where we are as we don't want to paint until we do the whole hallway, and first we need to change the radiator from the old flat panel one to something more in keeping with the property. I particularly resonated with Jonathan's comment above, with the thought that the eye wants to 'read' the ceiling and floor details...we felt a big box going across the whole top of the front door would feel a little 'top heavy' - as we came down the stairs and as you entered the hallway from the kitchen. We are pleased that the footprint of the whole thing was massively reduced. It turns out to be a handy little place to stash a torch as well. Thanks for everyone's comments - it was very much appreciated. Maybe I can send a photo of the final final result once decorated!

What a beautiful house. So pleased you have embraced the age and style of the house rather than deciding to ‘modernise’ it as so many posts on this forum want to do to their homes. The door is a lovely colour - agree with you about using that instead of the white on the surrounding woodwork - I’d use it on the inside of the door too. Crest idea is smashing. I think all it is missing then is some softening up ... I would add some beautifully simple planted larger tubs either side of the porch - I think the box look a bit too restrained & out of proportion - I’d go for white flowers spilling over the edge and silver foliage. Maybe something with height - olive trees? Bay ? Maybe echo the planting in window boxes on the ground floor cills (obviously without the trees!) ? White/silver planting looks smart during the day, but just glows in the evening & in artificial light so ideal at the doorway. More colourful planting would compete with the door, keeping the palette restrained would, instead, complement it.

Anything can be done - but just check price against another door before you commit. As for glass - looking at the small picture, I assume this is a Victorian house (or similar), in which case stained glass would look fantastic.

Thank you for your replies. Yes, it's a bit trickier than expected and even considered using a piece of skirting board. I will have a good look on that site and if there's nothing suitable will get a Joiner.
