Hello Ben, There are lots of alternatives to wood. How about granite, quartz or conglomerate marble? Conglomerate marble is more durable than standard marble, which is great for kitchens to reduce any possible staining or scratches. Granite and quartz are both very durable, non-porous materials and popular choices for kitchen worktops, too. Not to mention all three materials will last you a life time. It does all come to the personal preference, but just one small point: polished concrete DOES NOT HAVE TO BE GREY - certainly not the gunmetal/slightly paler grey of a prison cell that has been mentioned several times above. One of the greatest features of concrete is that it allows not just for creating shapes of your choice, but also hues. And even within the standard monochrome range you have a choice starting with black or very dark, anthracite greys to white or off-white, with every possible shade of grey in between. So this is something to consider. We have done black bathroom countertops and sinks, but also in hues of pink... The below pic is not exactly industrial (the style is more art-decoish, with highly polished dark wall panels etc) but it just shows that concrete doesn't need to evoke the inside of a destroyer's hull...

I think I’d advise against decking too, at least in the area close to the house as it would need to below the level of the damp course which would involve taking up the paving and a lot of ground works anyway. Decking needs to be raised so there’s no contact with ground but by doing so can create other problems such as make a great nesting site for rats and other rodents, not to mention slipperyness and more maintenance. Not saying it can’t be done and being a party pooper🙂, you could have steel frame and composite decking, just think it will be more work than you’re envisioning. With regards drainage and moss I’m guessing its north facing and doesn’t get much sun? Does water pool or puddle on the paving? Perhaps a drainage channel (see example pic) next to house may work more effectively but in a small area I don’t think it‘d be necessary. Certainly check the gutters for moss but i wouldn’t worry too much about the roof unless it’s really bad. On our house the birds tend to flick moss off the roof and gutters in search of food. You can get porcelain paving that looks like wood, maybe this could be an alternative. Personally I would get some advice from a few local landscapers to see what is possible and look at drainage.

Tadelakt or other polished plaster or even concrete in bathroom?

Hi Lucy, Loving the concept you have chosen! i would recommend you do the Tadelakt on the long bath wall as you are planning, plus all three walls in the shower area. i would also do the bulkheads on both sides. Then either tile or paint the rest of the bathroom (its a bit difficult to judge without seeing the space properly). If budget allows, i would do the whole room and ceiling in Tadelakt. In my experience its easier to keep clean than grouted mosaic tiles in a wet area. I completely understand your concerns about Tadelakt so heres a useful article about maintenance. i would use this same cleaning process for the whole bathroom and use an E cloth (which is so you wont need to use any other chemicals). the article also recommends that if you do need to use cleaning products elsewhere then its best to spray the cloth and then clean. https://betterhomeblog.com/how-to-take-care-of-tadelakt/ I also agree with you about the larger hexagonal tiles.
