Anyone got any good ideas for making an ex council house look cool?
Comments (61)I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . This is my kitchen, it is so much lighter and more space . The back board is the same as the work top , so no tiles to grout ....See MoreGot Kitchen Cabinets colours wrong, need help.....
Comments (51)Dear Azfar, I think your units are lovely, very sophisticated and much nicer than white. Your units and work tops are very similar to those I have in my kitchen, which also have black granite tops. I also have a wooden floor of a similar shade, please don't change this, it is lovely. I was aware when I had my kitchen fitted that the units appeared darker than in the showroom but this was due entirely to the colour of the walls they were installed on. To lift the units, and celebrate their beautiful colour, you should paint your walls a darker and contrasting colour, I have chosen a really shocking pink, Rock Candy, but there lots of options. The showroom I saw my units in used a burgundy colour, too dark for my Victorian kitchen. There are so many colour options which don't have to be expensive, play around with a few tester pots and see which you prefer. This is by far the cheapest option, and I'm sure you'll fall in love with your kitchen units again once your units are allowed to stand out. Incidentally your unit colour helps to visually integrate your stainless steel 'fridge, another reason to stick with it. If you want to add units in the future you could pick up on your new wall colour for a very stylish look....See MoreKitchen greys!
Comments (49)The lighting isnt really accurate at all because i need to take a photo in our new house but it gives me an idea. I realise grey is on trend but I also think as a neutral it should stand the test of time.I would be more concerned about the blue looking dated. The way I see it though I might as well put in a kitchen I like now and perhaps go off it, than putting in something that's "OK" just cos its not a current fad. There's nothing else jumping out at me at the minute....See MoreSuggestions for flooring to go with gray shaker units & viscon grani
Comments (21)River white granite is very similar to the splashback in the last photo.... the thing is we have in our mind to have a grey kitchen and everyone is saying you can't have all gray. our last house had alot of brown and beige, tan, cream etc, no one mentioned we needed gray to break that up LOL, and while I appreciate that those colours are warm, and gray and white are cool, this is an extremely warm and sunny house, lots of patio doors, often I think I've left a light on. So I think I can get away with gray and white without having to still drag brown in ..? If i add colour right. and by colour I mean red, teal, mustard... not brown! Which is a neutral IMO I think we will go ahead with the kitchen and leave the walls white for now and put floor samples down to decide.... then add accent colour organically....See MoreUser
