Large Garden Make-over

We completed a large garden make over which included our full range of landscaping skills. The design is a series of interlocking circles to connect a lawn, pergola & seating area.

The terraces are resin bound aggregate, pathways are constructed to from brick to match the steps. The raised planters are constructed from timber sleepers 'on end' which has allowed us to create the curves to tie in with the circular lawn and pathway.

Really looking forward to re-visiting soon to see how the planting has matured (not in pictures unfortunately)

We decided to go for artificial grass as we have two dogs who love digging up the grass and charging around. I do love the real thing but haven't got the time to spend on real grass that it needs, so artificial grass was the best option for us. From the garden you go straight in to the living room, so in the winter or wet weather the living room was getting trashed with the dogs coming in and out and the artificial grass solved this problem as well. We ended up renting the property out soon we did the garden so we didn't get round to finishing off the borders with bark or stones and I do wish I had used slightly more mature plants for the hedges but at least it is an easy garden to maintain from a rental point of view.

Hi - how I envy you that big kitchen; mine is tiny. I went for a warm cream with a splashback in bright red. You could perhaps add bright red accessories? I would go for a slightly darker, warmer shade of the walls, I would put large, bright ornaments on top of the cupboards (I particularly like hens and roosters) - they do need to be big though, otherwise they'll get lost. I'm sure you're going to have a table and chairs; my choice would be light wood, round, and maybe brightly coloured chairs to contrast the black tiles. Or, you go opt for a corner seating arrangement with comfy upholstered seating and bright cushions. Plants are an absolute must for me and that corner, to the left of the door, is crying out for a beautiful palm.....that is, if you don't opt for the corner seating! I would then place my plant(s) at, or near, the end of your counter. There are some very realistic "fake" candles around now - I have two which I've put into Moroccan style lamps which are only about 10 - 12" high. One sits of the floor, the other on a small table; they're pretty through the day and at night they flicker and cast patterns on the walls. Hi Alex A blank space - and a great one too! West is best so you are going to have a lot of options, not only how you'd like to use the space, but also so many plants, trees and shrubs are going to love your space. My advice is to sit down with a cold beer/chilled glass of something nice and imagine yourself in that space and how you'd actually use it. If you aren't a keen gardener, you do probably don't want high maintenance. Grass needs cutting at leat once a week in the growing season, so if you'd rather be doing something else, think more about different hard landscaping options. Gardens really need some thought as although they are cheaper than interiors (by and large) per square foot, they can also be extremely disruptive to put right if you decide you don't like your new paving/garden studio/shed somewhere down the line! A pink interior wall you hate can be repainted easily - gardens have to be dug up! Beth Chatto famously created her garden garden out of an area of old car park, so your tennis court might be perfect for a low maintenance drought garden. Could be modern or traditional - whatever makes you happy. Remember your garden is there to please no-one else but you... Feel free to get in touch for advice. Lucy

Bamboo can be a good idea if you buy the right type. Fargesia varieties are clumping bamboos so although a clump will grow bigger over time it won’t run rampant and grow everywhere on your garden. With a limited budget, you might have to be prepared to buy smaller plants and let them grow to create screening over time. Maybe a couple of larger plants or trees would help to start you off then fill in with others. Some are faster growing than others. Think about placement of plants to create the most privacy. A couple of large pots close by your sun room would also help to give some privacy. I often order online & have found Gardening Express to be excellent for quality, delivery & value - check out their ‘special deals’. Big Plant Nursery are also great for shrubs & exotics but are a little pricier. J Parker’s are also good for bulbs & plants in smaller pots. Or have a look around a local garden centre / nursery where they can give you some advice.
