Stretching the kitchen budget – how to get more for your money

In terms of cabinetry there are many different
finishes to cabinets at different price points. For example LEICHT manufacture
two types of concrete doors – (one, the more expensive is sprayed onto MDF and
creates a hard outer coat, whereas there is also a less expensive concrete
finish which is not so thick.) Cabinets
come in a wide variety of price points but many good quality – it often depends
on your taste and budget. With appliances there are top of the range appliances
that can look the same, and be the same size as ones at the bottom of the range
and the only difference is the specification and function so there’s no point
buying the most expensive if you only use the basic mode of working. It is key
to work out how you will use the kitchen and appliances as you can change the
spec without detracting from the function. You must use space as a luxury item
and keep as much free as possible. Don’t cram in cabinets just for the sake of
filling a space as empty space has as much use and style as too many cabinets.

Sounds like he is trying (in my opinion quite rightly) to reopen conversations about fees. It sounds like you had an agreement about providing plans and he provided them and you settled his bill. You have gone back and asked for additional services and it sounds like he may have initially made a goodwill gesture and offered some advice for free but you expect him to prepare for this meeting and attend the meeting thereby offering his professional expertise and local insight. With travel time and time spent in discussion with yourselves there is likely several hours work. If he is unable to charge you for this he would be much better allocating his time to other fee paying clients. I say start a dialogue, make sure you have contracted him for what you immediately need him to do and open discussions about where else he might envisage his expertise may be useful to you- it may be that his contacts, or his project management experience or his influence to expedite matters might save you money long term.

You’re trying to fit quite a lot in to what looks like a relatively compact space.. Perhaps prioritise the kitchen/diner for this room - don’t forget there will still be a living room at the front of the house. I would suggest leaving the kitchen where it is (this will help with budget) but still take out the wall as you’d like. Maybe closing off the exit door from the kitchen so that you can run units the whole way down that sink wall and have the island where the cooker is shown at the moment. Perhaps install connecting doors between the front living room and the kitchen/diner so you get the flexibility of opening or closing that room as needs be.

Hi Alice, you're on the right track! The layout of your flat is quite rigid and there isn't much that can be done within reasonable effort (and price). You might also consider removing the wall to the stair and moving the first steps towards the toilet. This will further enlarge the space. Hiring a building company would of course increase the cost by 15-20% but if you don't have any experience in construction and project management, it is by far the most sensible thing to do. For a price tag, even a rough estimate, we would need quite a few more details about the existing house, furniture, finishes.
