Paint for wall panelling in utility room

Hi I’m renovating my 70s style utility room into a clean cool haven of Scandi calm. It has a tongue and groove panelled wall which I have to keep, so I’m going to paint it, undercoat already applied, but I am struggling to choose a colour. There will be nothing else on this wall so it will be one big plane of whatever colour.

Other walls are Timeless by Dulux
Door and window will be painted white
Floor is going to be pale grey tiles
Units will be white handleless gloss
Smallish work surface will be maple with a stainless steel sink.

It depends on the undertone of the grey tiles, but Farrow and Ball 'Light grey' is lovely and has some depth and a tinge of green.

thank. I'll look for that colour. The tiles are pale but have a warm rather than cool undertone and I shoud have said, the room is north facing.

Hi Sophia, I think the floor is the most important thing as it won't be changed once it's down, paint it relatively cheap. The best advice I could give (based on my recent experience) is that if you put a cool grey floor in a room that's filled with sun it's fine. If you do the same in a North facing room it can feel gloomy and cold and then you have the option of taking well known advice for a North facing room which is 'opt for warm, creamier colours for the walls'. Well this doesn't work too well with grey floors, it can look sickly. Therefore, the floor is a consideration at this point. There is a gorgeous tile from Topps called 'Sculpt' in beige which is the very same colour as warm concrete and it has an amazing look to it. General advice is to avoid cold greys in North faicng rooms and opt for yellow based neutrals. I have used Skimming Stone in my kitchen (North facing) but it's got lots of natural wood. Even though it may be tricky to find the right colour with your lovely looking units. I feel a colour could well work. Sorry I’m not an colour expert myself but some people here are! Possibly something a little ‘moodier’ than just a light grey, say. I’m sure you’ll get some more useful suggestions, but you can always try the Dulux’ visualiser app. Although not overly reliable, it could give you some ideas.

Looking at the floor and tiles I think a shade of taupe would look lovely, perhaps at the paler end. All the paint companies do shades of taupe so worth a look. F&B Purbeck Stone is lovely, or the paler Skimming Stone, in fact look at all their neutrals which are lovely. Little Green’s Slaked Lime is also lovely (last picture).

I am a bit biased being an artist but you have a great wall above that worksurface for some art. Maybe deliberately choose a bold piece with either a colour scheme which ties in with the blues in your kitchen or even includes some complimentary contrasts - orange. accessorise with the same colours, window blinds, hand towels, even wash baskets etc. artfinder.com is a good place to look.
