Need ideas for redecorating dark and dated living area
Comments (30)You will need to move away from small incandescent light sources. Those JLP lights will be like adding candles. If you paint the ceiling white you can use a decent quality linear LED linear light source instead of those low out put spots - it would also save you lots on your energy bill. For example, this linear light comes in any RAL (colour) and a 73W 10000Lm LED version wold cost you around £290 delivered: This would be mounted where you have your current spotlights but would one of your spots delivers between 420 and 750Lm. If you had this colour matched to the beams they would blend in and your ceiling would become your light source. We do this a lot with RGB for night clubs and theatres - it creates a great ambience....See MoreGrade two listed paneled lounge
Comments (15)What a great space to work with! The ideas already mentioned by yourself and others are great. I have a couple other suggestions to add. Since you're keeping the wooden paneling as-is I think you can afford to break the rules a little an add in some large scale pale artwork (along with the mirror already suggested - personally I'd want to put that above the fireplace though). I would also add a large pale area rug which still feels in keeping with the age of the property. I've linked some suggestions below. The first photo I've attached shows a combination of these two suggestions to good effect - with the pale lampshades also complimenting the colour scheme nicely. http://www.benuta.co.uk/velvet-vintage-rug-beige-2.html http://www.benuta.co.uk/velvet-vintage-rug-cream-5.html http://www.benuta.co.uk/optic-cosy-rug-white.html Finally I would consider adding warm LED flat strip lights on top of the wooden panel ledge which would create an even uplighting to for the room but remain invisible unless looked at from above. I can't find a photo of exactly what I mean featuring paneling but hopefully the hallway pic gives you the idea. Then layer a multi-arm pendant and floor/table lamps to create an invitingly lit space....See Morecornice, panelling, floor colour help
Comments (10)Hi again, Sam. So you went for green? It’s gorgeous! Have you made a decision for wall colour yet? I was thinking that a brownish pink earthy reddish colour could be really nice. Goes with green and with a wooden floor and copper/gold accessories and gives you warmth in a north facing room. Anyway, was just a thought....See MoreWhat to do with dark oak panelled walls?
Comments (11)We've been faced with a similar dilemma recently and our client wanted to paint the oak panelling. I can understand the wish to brighten. As you can see in the submitted photos, painting the panelling can look attractive when handled well, but I don't think it makes the rooms look more modern. To me it makes the rooms look rather more 'Georgian' since after oak became scarce in the UK by the middle of the 18th Century, painted panelling became much more common. Then in the mid- to late 20th Century, painting over dark oak was seen as a way to escape from what was perceived as dark, gloomy and Victorian. I'd stick with my initial, less conventional advice, but it depends on the effect you're after....See Morechloeloves
