Need advice for a design of a dark living room
Comments (18)Based on the suggestions already mentioned. You might want to consider: Moving the furniture around to get a feel for the layout. Before purchasing the new sofa, cushions, tv wall bracket. Maybe change the pin spot bulbs to a colder tone-if they are LED. This will provide a whiter light. If the entrance door is adjacent to the kitchen, is it worth considering a half glazed door to let in natural light? Assuming their is a hallway leading to the kitchen end of the room. If the TV is wall mounted you will still need the table under it, to house the sky box etc. so the visible viewing angle will reduce if you do not have a swivel wall bracket (mentioned earlier). The extractor hood-is it vented through the wall? If so is their an option to install a small window next to it to let in some daylight? If the room faces North, the hood faces East (I think). So a port hole window would provide light in the morning for the kitchen. Hope this helps with the planning. Good luck....See MoreNeed advice for awkward open-plan living/dining room
Comments (5)I would raise the curtain poles up and make more of the windows. I would suggest a round dining table, extendable as mentioned. I think as it is a new build you probably need to keep to modern with an eclectic twist. Changing the flooring doesn't need to be over expensive but would make the room feel bigger and would give you more flexibility. I would use warm neutrals on the walls and use colour in your soft furnishings, rug and accessories. A few fab pieces of art with colour would look great. As mentioned above you could easily change the point for the TV. Use good quality wood floating shelves and you can have a space at the back pre-cut on order for the wires to go down and hide wiring and access by a cable tidy in a neautral colour for the walls. This will take away furniture on the floor taking up space for the TV and digital box, Xbox etc. Making the room feel bigger and this TV was on special bracket so you can bring the TV out and re-position or tilt up and down. Picture from past project including floating shelves and cable tidy. These shelves are in walnut with oak stripes on the front but there are many different woods you could choose from....See MoreHelp with designing living room/dining/kitchen please.
Comments (6)Regarding plug sockets - you can never have too many! Make sure there are enough in the kitchen at counter-top level. Either side of the bed is very useful and I would recommend one in the hall to plug the hoover into. I would also suggest a hotel style additional light switch by the bed head (its a small luxury but I love being able to turn it off without going back to the door). It doesn't look like there's that much counter top space in the kitchen so I would recommend buying something like this as an island: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/kitchen-products/kitchen-islands-trolleys/stenstorp-kitchen-island-white-oak-art-60323021/ This would also help to divide the kitchen/living space and provides space for a couple of bar stools for casual dining/chatting whilst cooking. If your daughter likes this idea then you may want to have a pendant light fitting over the island. Consider bathroom storage and where a shaver socket would be best placed for electric toothbrushes etc. If opting for spotlighting then get dimmer switches so you can control how bright they are. It also looks like the bathroom door and hall cupboard door will intersect each other at the moment so I would suggest having the bathroom door open inwards instead....See MoreHow to style a new long living room with 2 doors
