Ground cover in-between Grass and Bushes

Hi, could you please tell me the groundcover in-between the grass and the bushes as well as the magenta flowers next to the Maple? Thank you! I love what you did!

the ground cover at the edge of the lawn is vinca and the magenta flowers are impatients.

Hi! You did an amazing job! You garden has a clear structure now which is a necessary aesthetics. I agree with Pannacota - adding some perennials would soften the edges - I, personally, would prefer it the way - although the garden is already beautiful. You may also play with bulbs this autumn - maybe even sporadically plant crocuses into your turf to have a flower carpet in the spring. But, an amazing job and a labor of love indeed.

Thanks very much for the suggestions. I think we might go for willow screening for a short term fix & if we like it, could be the answer until the fence needs replaced. It would also help disguise the current lack of symmetry if we cover the whole fence. Bamboo is an interesting suggestion but I'm a bit concerned about my ability to keep it under control. Definitely one for me to think about, as it could look great if I get it right.

Hello Moomin. Thank you for posting your query. A planting design takes time, weighing up the site, your style and maintenance. Year round structure for aesthetics as well as screening and privacy come first. Always a shame when planting is an afterthought after landscaping! However this is very common and I've had some experience of planting design commissions after landscaping has been done. My initial thoughts do not take into account many things which can't be conveyed in one photo provided here (as designers we take into account the various views within the garden amongst other things) but I will outline here a sketchy response to demonstrate some considerations. There have been some good suggestions made above. Jonathandb1972 has a good one, planting a carefully selected tree, so the canopy softens (but not hides) the view of the conservatory behind. Olive could be an option but depends on the aspect given that your a fellow Yorkshire resident! Alternatively there's Pyrus salicifolia, or Prunus lusitanica the latter responding particularly well to pruning to retain the size. Always talk to your neighbour about your careful choices and help them to understand that you've considered maintenance.... And the benefit of planting for them! For best results a planter at least 50cm deep and nearly as much wide to help a tree flourish. Deeper would be better. Keeping a collection of containers of the same/similar material would unify the view. Perhaps allowing a climber up the adjacent wall which faces you when descending the steps? A third container might fit in the corner in front of the downpipe? Although the dimensions of space available would determine if this is possible. The dark colour of the fence is receding and also provides a lovely neutral colour to show off the foliage of the specimen. A very rough sketch is shown here in a version of your photo below. I've just done it on the iPad so is a bit rough and ready. In order to avoid the tree becoming too much of a focal point (you're trying to avoid looking at the building behind) a bold evergreen plant to the left corner next to the steps would draw your eye within the garden. This could then be balanced out with another one to the right of the tree or possibly one up the steps against the fence. This all depends on scale and space available. This would be my first draft concept but might well come to a different response when seeing the garden for real. Happy planting!

Time is of the essence. I would agree with the comments already made. I would also suggest the following: leave the grass, as removing it and replacing with something else will take time. Buy two large pots (the largest you can afford) in white to match the windows or black to match the front door for either side of the front door and plant up with sarcococca, daphnes and winter honeysuckle for scent right now, with trailing ivy and tete-a-tete daffodils (which you can buy in flower). Buy an additional pot, slightly smaller and place on what looks like a circular manhole cover. Plant this up with winter/spring bedding - there are lots to choose from, but keep the pot the same colour as the other two - perhaps add pale yellow wallflowers. Add a collection of pots and similar planting - the knack is to keep it simple. Add a window box for the full length of the window and plant again with ivy and tete-a-tete daffodils and pansy 'cool wave mixed' or pansy 'sorbet yellow frost'. For the left hand side of the picture plant a half-standard viburnum to balance the scene and again underplant with daffodils and pale yellow wallflowers. Once Mother's Day is out of the way you can then think about adding (depending on which way the front of the house faces) flowering shrubs such as abelia, hydrangea, roses or philadelphus to sit below the window to allow the scent to waft in to the room, and to link the left hand side to the right hand side. One thing to remember with pots in front gardens is to weigh them down so that they do not disappear overnight. If the small patch of lawn then becomes a nuisance to mow, remove it, cover the area with membrane and add decorative stone. You could start with larger stones towards the back and getting smaller towards the front, with some larger ones dotted in around pots for variety. Always keep the colour scheme simple for a stylish approach to the house - your mum is very lucky.
