Furniture layout in an odd shaped living room
Comments (9)Hi. I think you have to arrange it so there are two separately zoned areas - but it can look cohesive. You need flexibility and ample room to be able to walk around the furniture for access to the doors. Do you use the fireplace? Assuming you do, I would suggest an L-shaped couch with the L under the window to the left of the fireplace and the back of the couch in front of the french doors to the outside, built-in bookshelves/TV on the long wall to the right of the french doors, a large rug in front of the couch with coffee table, an armchair facing the couch on the other side of the fireplace and then a separate sitting area - two chairs and a little table - in front of the large window. If you have something to look at out there, have the chairs face out, if not, have them face in. If you keep all the furniture with a low profile and similar colour scheme and have the chairs and armchair easily moveable/slidable then you can pull all the furniture up together when you have large numbers of people sitting around the fireplace or watching the TV. Lamps can be added at the end, but probably one in the corner next to the smaller window and then one or two down the other end near the large window. This is the kind of arrangement I'm talking about (there are three photos of the living room if you click on the link): I hope that helps!...See MoreNeed some advice regarding our dining room!
Comments (18)hi I love the elegant look of this room. I particularly like the colour and style of your furniture (looks pinky tone on my pic which is lovely) I think you need a little more drama in there and agree paint chimney breast I would go really dark and moody to lift your wall paper and furniture like a chalky charcoal in silk to pick up shimmer in paper I would keep accessories in either silver or gold I would choose silver chrome to pick up the beautiful mirror which I love and feel chrome will give it a more edgey look. keep paintwork white to contrast. im not s lover of the corner unit and would go with ladder shelves in white or a drinks table in lovely chrome and lovely mirrored pieces thats what I see anyway but lovely starting point would not dismiss tinkering with it a bit more. lots to like there already...See MoreNeed advice for awkward open-plan living/dining room
Comments (5)I would raise the curtain poles up and make more of the windows. I would suggest a round dining table, extendable as mentioned. I think as it is a new build you probably need to keep to modern with an eclectic twist. Changing the flooring doesn't need to be over expensive but would make the room feel bigger and would give you more flexibility. I would use warm neutrals on the walls and use colour in your soft furnishings, rug and accessories. A few fab pieces of art with colour would look great. As mentioned above you could easily change the point for the TV. Use good quality wood floating shelves and you can have a space at the back pre-cut on order for the wires to go down and hide wiring and access by a cable tidy in a neautral colour for the walls. This will take away furniture on the floor taking up space for the TV and digital box, Xbox etc. Making the room feel bigger and this TV was on special bracket so you can bring the TV out and re-position or tilt up and down. Picture from past project including floating shelves and cable tidy. These shelves are in walnut with oak stripes on the front but there are many different woods you could choose from....See MoreAdvice needed on side return extension and connecting room layout!
Comments (3)Hey Andrei, Thanks for your advice - I should have mentioned that yes we are getting the proper advice, we are choosing an architect at the moment and I will make a note to ask them specifically about the stairs/kitchen fire risk aspect. I totally agree that if the kitchen was moved to the middle room (ie next to the open stairs) it would be ok to have it as the 'passage' to other rooms, however if it isn't a kitchen and is used as living space I'm more concerned about this. I guess because in a kitchen you're probably busy, whereas if you're in living area you're more likely to be relaxing and regular disturbance isnt great? We're not keen on moving the kitchen to another room, I feel it would look really out of place in either the front room with bay window, or the middle room with the open stairs (cooking smells/smoke/noise would travel upstairs easily etc). Equally, we're keen to avoid closing off the stairs too - worried it would make them pretty dark and would also affect the light to the middle room! I think I've narrowed down my worries to being basically that if the current dining room becomes living space, and has a large entrance to the kitchen where the current window is (plus maybe an additional entrance where the current doorway is), it makes the room really hard to use in terms of layout and furniture etc. It won't have much usable wall space and I'm struggling to think of how we could layout anything like storage/some seating, maybe a desk etc. Does that make more sense?...See MoreE D
