kitchen/breakfast room renovation

We are torn between keeping the two rooms separate or opening them up into one, but hopefully keeping them looking like two different areas, ie kitchen and diner/storage. They are not very big, being 2500mm wide X 6990mm long overall (roughly half and half) The kitchen plan works out fine, but without the fridge/freezer (which I want free standing, or with an outer cabinet). This would mean still having the fridge/freezer in the breakfast room. I don't like integrated ones as they are inefficient and I need the kitchen space for storage.

Hi,

Would you have any images or spaces of the space? this makes visualisation easier.
Having a more open space with kitchen and dining or 2 more private zones depends on how you want to use the spaces; you might find that you want to interact with guests who may be at the dining end or it may be that you want to hide the kitchen clutter and enjoy a separate dining space.

You could also consider glazed pocket doors or internal French doors/folding door to open and close the spaces as and when.

if you are going for free standing FF, I would definitely go for a cabinet surround to give a more cohesive look.

Great use of colour to make a statement but I would use it as an accessory colour away from the kitchen. having said that, it is interesting to read that the kitchen was hand painted to match the wall colour and not the other way round! it's all about personal taste so if owners love it then that's all that matters. Bravo for use of the bar-like cabinet for glasses, this gives the feel of a bar and it is very trendy. We're seeing more of this around homes. The worktop is FANTASTIC.

Definitely. My original kitchen was developer’s kitchen —ie, it photographed well but did not function. The only place to put a table in the kitchen itself would have been in front of the back door, which is itself a natural thoroughfare from the open plan living room. Now I have a lovely breakfast bar/peninsula facing the brightest part of the kitchen, and I can easily spend hours there over breakfast, brunch or coffee. Dinner I tend to eat in front of the tv, and when I’ve visitors the main table in the dining room is used.

I don't feel this room really fits a peninsula but obviously you'd like to sit with a view so putting sitting facing the window is a perfect solution. The sink doesn't need to be in front of the window as you hardly spend any time washing up these days, especially with a dishwasher. Move this to the left and continue the top over with leg space (perhaps 300 deep units for a sneaky bit of storage). Alternatively, could you have one door to the garden and do Carolina's idea over the other door? good luck Emily

Why do you think that integrated fridge freezers are inefficient? I've never found that to be the case.

Building furniture too closely around freestanding appliances is a lot more damaging to the efficiency of those products - where as integrated machines are designed to be built in without loosing efficiency.

Luckily for us all - you can actually see the rating and running costs etc before you make a final choice.

But remember, if you are intending to build furniture around free standing appliances - you MUST leave the recommended air flow space around - or the appliance will overheat and probably will need to be replaced much sooner than they would if left totally freestanding.
