Open plan room wall colour ideas

Hi, recently brought our first home, a 3 bed semi with an open plan kitchen/diner/living area. Personally love the idea of a modern light grey & mid to dark blue feature wall/s with lots of plants and mirrors. Would love some suggestions on what to do with the walls to have the feature wall without loosing too much light? I'm willing to paint the whole area. The only furniture we've brought so far is a medium fabric grey sofa.

Hi Hanifa,

The first thing I would suggest is to work out which direction the patio doors are facing, and take account of the quantity and quality of the light. This is so important!

Use the compass app on your phone for this.

Colours look different depending on your room orientation. If your room is south facing for example, then you'll get a decent amount of light all day, so you can choose pretty much any colour scheme.

The room looks pretty narrow, so I'd avoid using bright, saturated colours. Stick to lighter shades, especially on the feature wall.

The existing grey/green walls look ok. It also links the kitchen and dining area which looks good. You could divide the dining area from the lounge with a few plants. Try a Palm plant like a Kentia Palm (B+Q). They doesn't need much light, and look great in any room.

I think the curtains would work better in a simple, white fabric. If you don't need to block out extremely bright light, then use a voile, muslin or other sheer fabric.

Also, be careful adding too much grey. You don't want the room looking too drab.

Buy testers, paint on large pieces of paper or card, and place around the space. Check the colours at different times of the day, to better help you decide on the right choice.

Grey is a difficult colour to get right in different lights. Too much makes it cold looking. Get it right and it's nice.

I would select one or two colours max (complimentary colours are easier to work with) and then combine this with more natural or neutral finishes so either woods, stone, white or grey (cold grey will look generally more contemporary or warm greys will be a bit more comforting)

Hi all, Thank you for your comments; I appreciate them! Natasha - the units you have suggested are very much what I had in mind. We will have a shaker kitchen and the media unit would also be shaker style and would have 4-6 cupboards with the TV in the middle with book shelves either side. Part of the reason we kept a partial wall was to make the space more usable. I can’t envision how the fully open plan room will be able to meet all our needs, but I am open to ideas! I feel that open plan would be more impressive, but potentially less usable. With regards to the doors. I do plan to reverse the doors both into the kitchen and family room part, but couldn’t work out how to do it on the app I used for the floor plan. It is a 1920s house and we have the original doors which we are planning to keep. We are also keeping a lot of floor space as when the table is not extended, we still have young children with lots of Lego and trains etc. I plan for these to be hidden in the cupboards at bedtime. J - we haven’t installed the kitchen but we have ordered it and paid a big deposit. Some of the units are bespoke/irregular sizes and I don’t think we would be willing to change this. I completely missed that! LOL. Mornings ;0) - the door will indeed be painted the same colour. I just took it off to paint all the door frame and it’s on my list for the next rainy day (been starting the garden tidy up now the patio is done as it’s a mess!) Only pain is that from the hallway it will be painted a lighter colour so now I have to sand down all the drips on it and the frame as I made a mess, ha ha. Would have loved dark doors in the hall BUT it’s a tiny space with barely any natural light and has 5 doors in it!! (Bungalow) pfff. All wood so have to paint them (horrified smiley face inserted here!!)

If you want it to be all the same colour to match the grey sofa then look at dove grey fascias. They will also mix better with the wooden effect flooring as opposed to what you have now as that clashes against the wooden kitchen doors
