If you're wanting a traditional look then I'd go for a dark table. You could look at getting an antique table and adding modern upholstered chairs. If you don't want somethng traditonal then I wouldn't limit yourself to a wood, just spend time looking at tables until you find something you love and then plan the decor around that

If you haven't bought it yet… I've had two induction hobs. The first, a Zanussi with Dell Corning glass had far more scratch-resistant glass than my latest, a Bosch, with Shott Ceran glass. I use the same saucepans and cooking techniques on both. Learn to hold the frying pan above the hob and flip the contents – like you see TV chefs doing. Try not to drag the pans across the top of the hob to move to other cooking areas or to agitate their contents by sliding back and forth. If nothing else it will make you feel a little smug when the non-cooks and guests see you manipulating the pans like a pro. Cleaning is easy with any spray kitchen cleaner, or glass hob spray, about a quid at Wilkinson's. Occasionally you will need a glass hob cream cleaner to remove the stubborn spills but it will last a couple of years. Wipe off with kitchen roll and polish with those special glass cleaning cloths, which are washable and cost about fifty pence each. Another neat trick is to cover the whole induction hob with kitchen roll then cook on top. The paper will never catch fire and saves the hob from hard-to-remove spills such as bubbling jam or chutney. Induction heat is not affected by the paper. I also rise sleepy dough when making bread by putting the tins full of dough on the hob set at lowest setting for 10 or 15 minutes. Most/all induction hobs will have a timer to turn the heat off automatically.

Hi Rosemary, The issue you will find with glass tables is that there is a huge selection of 6 to 8 seaters at a variety of priced but when you move up to 10 place settings the selection reduces and the prices tend to go through the roof. A trick I often use is to but two moderately priced glass tables in the style I like then remove the glass tops (I sometimes recycle them as large coffee tables) Once you have your two bases you set them in the room and cut a piece of MDF or plywood to the maximum size you feel the room could take. Check the bases are stable with this size top then if all is OK send the top to a local glass merchant to cut this in thick glass. A piece of glass big enough to seat ten will have to be between 12 and 20mm laminated glass. (The glass company will advise you) This will be very heavy !!!!......and will cost a fair amount but you end up with a stunning table, the correct size for the room and usually a fraction the cost of a ten seater designer table.. Here is an example of a base I used recently. I bought three of these and had one large piece of thick glass to go on top. The three glass tops left over were used in the lounge and family room as coffee tables (I had some simple MDF boxes made to support them clad in mirror.) OnePlan did the drawings for our kitchen :-) Her 3D version of the drawings allowed us to see how it would look in real life, which was a big plus and helped to make the decision to go for this layout. Our previous kitchen was a U-shape, so the change was pretty big. Glad you like it :-) Our windows are Velux. Can't remember the size, will have to ask the other half when he comes home. They are all remote controlled. We never considered just glass for the roof. I don't know why not. Didn't cross our minds. I haven't noticed any bleaching problems, but then the kitchen Velux windows are north facing, which I think yours would be too, so the light isn't that bright. The ones facing south, above our dining area, are shaded by a big tree. You could have remote controlled shades if the light would be too bright. We have remote controlled shutters on the outside (that I only close when it storms, because we have loads of trees surrounding the house). I've included a pic of the Velux spotlights too. I don't know at what angle they should be for the self-cleaning glass to work, but I would have thought our roof pitch is pretty normal.
