That's a sapling. Over time the bole will get much thicker and the surface roots will get beyond where the fence is now - but the fence won't last that long. Maturity for this tree is many years away. As the tree will be far prettier than the fence, why sacrifice it anyway? The beautiful mature bark alone will make it worth caring for. Something I can never quite grasp is why it is assumed, whether or not a plant is poisonous, any part of it is ever going to be eaten, even by mistake? For heaven's sake, are we becoming so neurotic we are about to cut and burn everything some half-witted scribbler tells us is poisonous? Even if true (it is but that is beside the point), what are the chances that even a child is going to be tempted to taste it? Earth certainly. Well, my kids tried when very small. Worms, maybe. Slugs or spiders possibly. But even the lowest leaves of any such plant are out of reach. Sleep easy. Leave the tree alone.

I wouldn't have put a lawn in. You can see how it goes, but they require a lot of mowing and it sounds like you don't get a lot of sun so it may well end up very mossy and wet most of the time. See how it goes but maybe you need the deck to be sited on the left, so it is in the sun in the middle of the day/evening if possible, so not near the house if it faces east. Evergreen climbers are essential for small gardens with fences. Trachelospermum jasminoides, has lovely scented flowers in the summer and Hydrangea seemannii and Pileostegia Viburnoides are good in shade. I would put in a lot of planting on the shady side of the garden, a good evergreen grass for clay is Carex pendula. I would also plant an Amelanchier or Acer at the far end to screen the neighbours windows and autumn colour. You could look up evergreen ground covers for shade. Good luck!

I'm fortunate enough to have both Summer and Winter holidays, so very difficult to chose my ideal.... In Winter I adore skiing and all social activities involving that, and in Summer I adore the beach, the sea, the sun, BBQ's and all those social activities as well. But I also enjoy long walks in the country side on a crisp Spring day, or in a beautiful Autumn forest enjoying the different colours as the trees and plants go to sleep. As an outdoor person, I really find it difficult answering this question, so choosing "other" for me was the only answer I could give. Of course I also enjoy Cities - London, Paris, New York and Milan, Cape Town, Nice, St. Petersburg. Oh dear, so many places to see, so little time :-))

I’m presuming they’re from 2 different trees? I agree with Sonia that it’s hard to tell the type but the first pic definitely looks like eating apples & the 2nd cooking apples. Both can be used for cooking but the cooking apples will soften much more & go mushy while the eating apples will keep their shape more so could be used for things like tarte tatin. Other options are apple pie, apple crumble, apple cake or using them in savoury recipes, e.g with pork. If you cook the cooking apples to make an apple sauce, that can be substituted for butter in some recipes to make a lower fat cake. We chop & store our apples in the freezer for use during the year. Or you could invest in an apple press to get juice / make cider.
