Design Dilemma Living Rooms Fireplaces

fireplace dilemma

The previous owners tiled over the fire place and I’m torn with how to mend it. I want to have a working fireplace/stove but am debating on which wood to use. Any recommendations/suggestions of professionals would be hugely appreciated!!

Firstly a general builder can open up the Chimney and get rid of the tiles and the half height mantelpiece ( what were they thinking?? ). Secondly get a Chimney sweep in to check over the Chimney with a camera and advise if it is suitable for a log burner. You may find that companies that sell log burners will do a site visit to check out suitability too.

The problem is the stark cold white walls against the soft warm browns of the fireplace. I don't recommend going all beige but try colours from the same warm spectrum as the fireplace and I think you'll find it looks more natural in the space. Also, the round candles don't work with the squares and oblongs of the fireplace; find other accessories that enhance rather than scream at the shapes and colours and that could make a huge difference. So could a mirror or picture above it - it would shift the focus so the fireplace doesn't dominate. Work with it, not against, then judge it. These fireplaces are handsome; trying to pretty them doesn't work.

"710 approx to meet hetas regs", this is new to me, and explains a lot of posts similar on Houzz lately. I moved out of a rental that had nowhere near that with a log burner in, and in fact nowhere near the depth youre trying to achieve! I think I would have said sod the regs and put it how you want, swear it was always like that lol. ah well... I'm sure there is a solution, somehow....

Are the recesses the same size? Would the piano fit on the right and the lower chest on the left? The alcoves are slightly off balance due to the difference in size of the objects in them. The smaller chest I think is too low and would be better swapped for a larger more commanding Wooden chest of a similar bulk to the piano. Or something like this to brighten the corner and tone in with the lovely mustard armchair at the other end. Plus I'd swap the silvery edged mirror with chunky wood to tie in with the sofas as it currently doesn't match anything. This one has a shelf on it to make up for the lack of a mantel. Lastly i'd pull the sofa ends round a little to face the Fireplace and the piano as currently it's a bit of a walk through. Maybe separate the two armchairs between doors, put the leather one there. Move the dogtooth one next to the new mustard sideboard in the alcove and bring the dogtooth one further in to the room to counteract the furniture all lining the walls.

Thank you ED. It had loads of ring marks before, which were horrible (why would you leave tea/coffee cups on a lovely old fireplace ??!! ). Thankfully most of them have been scrubbed off. I’m really grateful for your comments,
