Is a 6 metre run of kitchen too long?
Comments (12)I always think the long run of cabinets looks absolutely fantastic, and if you’ve got the space to do that I absolutely think you should. The only problem I found, is when you have a long row of matching cupboards, you forget what you put in each one! I also note in the new layout you’ve got your sink opposite your hob, which for many people is a superstitious no no. Fire and water/male and female in opposition, is the idea, which I just mention in case you’re thinking of selling on. Personally I’d also ditch the wall cabinets in favour of some open shelving either side the extractor, which may look neater. Comments (7)Hi Ros, I would have a think about how much extending/ changing layout would cost in all. If you only plan to be there for a few more years at the most then it may be worth considering the move sooner. However, if you are planning on staying and making some changes, open plan living is a fantastic option for a growing family. Opening the space between the dining and kitchen area would create a lovely big room with plenty of roaming space. Open plan living is also a very popular option these days so I don't necessarily think it will hamper any future sale with not having the two separate rooms. We have a large number of clients who want to knock walls down and extend to accommodate a more open plan layout and it's certainly an option that is increasing in popularity. Extending below the car part could be quite costly considering you may want to move in a few years time. Without actually looking at it, it's difficult to determine if it would be worthwhile. Comments (3)My garden originally had a step down from the kitchen, onto wobbly concrete, then 2 steps up to the rest of the garden. We eventually decked the lower patio bringing it level with the kitchen door. Problem with decking is it isn’t long lived. Within 8 years it was starting to rot. However, there are some lovely hardwood decks that aren’t cheap but last much longer. Last year we removed the deck and laid paving level with the kitchen door with a drainage grill running by the house. It wasn’t cheap but I think it will outlive me! With yours, I think the 2nd option sounds good. I would raise the whole lot level with the dining room, create a nice big patio suitable for seating or a table and chairs, and then further on create nice wide steps going down to the lawn. This can be done with decking (budget option) or paving ( more expensive sandstone/porcelain). Your current layout isn’t ideal and very bitty. This is my little patio level with house then steps up....See Moreextending 2 bedroom detached chalet bungalow into 4 bedrooms
Comments (6)I also don’t think you can live there while it’s being done. I think you should look into raising the roof then connecting the main house roof to the roof of the kitchen wing. I also don’t think you need to remove what looks like a top end conservatory. But you do need to find a good architect to help discuss what is possible and you need to think about your budget as it’s a big undertaking. For what it’s worth this is what I would do....See MoreDual Designs
