Showers: What is the minimum size glass screen to prevent a wet floor?

Hi all. I am renovating my flat and installing a walk in shower. Not a wet room, just an open tray. I don't want it to have a door due to bathroom layout and look.The tray will be 1500mm wide and probably 800mm deep, although I could go to 900mm if needed but it may start to dominate the room and make it feel cramped. I will have a vertical drop rain type shower head which will help reduce the splash distance I hope.
I need to balance having access into the shower area with an appropriate size shower screen to stop the floor from getting too wet. Too small an access will look silly. Too large and I get a wet floor. I want the bathroom to feel spacious and not like I'm cramming things in.
I have searched the forums and web but can't find any clear advice.

Hi Robert, i have a 1200mm screen on a 1700mm x 800mm shower base and have had no problems with water getting on the floor. i also have a rain shower.

I have a 1600 x 800mm shower tray with a 1000 x 2000mm glass screen. My tray is in an alcove so walls on 3x sides. I wouldn't want to have an entry any smaller than mine. I do get a bit of spray on the floor outside the shower but mainly because I use the handheld shower head rather than my rain shower (find my rain shower is too high up and water pressure too low for hair washing!)

I just have a small Ikea bath mat which soaks up any stray droplets.

EDIT:

I do not have a flipper panel or return on my shower screen, just a straight fixed screen.

Free standing baths are only suitable for larger rooms where you have the ability to position the bath with free access all the way round, I regularly remove them from smaller bathrooms when doing re-fits, people like the aesthetics of the free standing bath and plough ahead and install them against a wall, the result is a disgusting accumulation of dust, fluff, pubic hair etc, this will happen quite quickly and you will regret having gone down this route. The concept of having the bath with no curtain is interesting though, in a bathroom around 2.1m square, most of the bathroom will be effected by splashing, the room will need a wet room floor former, and will require that the whole room is tanked prior to tiling, have a look at. (http://www.wetroominnovations.com) I usually use their Maxus formers and Purus gully traps. you can indeed get a flexible waste connection, have a look at McAlpine "Flexcon" range, these are available through any reputable merchants, these are quite substantial and would stand up to semi regular movement, if your free standing bath is an acrylic bath it won't be too heavy, so moving it would be quite straight forward, but I would suggest having small felt pads on the feet to protect the tiled surface, also from a drying point of view, Karcher have a very good little gadget for cleaning windows, which vacuums up the water, I often mention it to clients and any who have bought one have been delighted at how easy it is to use, it will leave the floor almost dry once you have used it, one note of caution would be your choice of floor tile, you will need a porcelain tile that has an R rating, this is a slip resistant rating and would be most advised. another note of caution, because the splashing will not be controlled, any vanity or wood based furniture will deteriorate. We have an independent bathroom company near to where we live. We spent hours looking on line at different products until we were so confused with it all. We picked a Darryl shower cabinet in the end, priced up on line and then visited the local showroom to see if they would price match - they matched the price on line and gave us a really great deal. We have a rain shower and it is fab, it's not electric, just runs off the hot and cold pipes. We got our bath from the Cast Iron bath company when they had a sale on. It's worth gathering together all the items you would like to purchase and then just asking for the cheapest price from everyone, as you can see, we got a good price but still gave the business to our local showroom. I like how your bathroom is looking so far and the traditional style. I would go for a high quality, shower curtain in a gorgeous pattern. I love the ones from anthropologie for example. Thank you all so much for your input. Really do appreciate it. (AS - unfortunately the loo has to be on the side nearest the riser that holds the waste pipes - but thank you for taking the time to do the plan). I should probably have mentioned that the shower will be a rainfall one and the pressure isn't great - so it's not a really powerful shower that would definitely flood. What I am looking into now is perhaps a slightly recessed shower tray - harder for water to go up right?! rather than ugly built up sides. A bit like this image bit recessed shallow tray.

Does depend on your water pressure too - the stronger the pressure - the further the splash will travel !

I had a 1400 X 900 tray with a 900x900 screen and there was hardly any splash on the end tiles or outside the shower tray. I did have a fixed return panel (approx 10cm-20cm) wide and I think that really helped contain a lot of spray.

I agree with OnePlan it can depend on your pressure but 1m should be fine to reduce spray.

Hi, so we went for a 1600x800 tray with a glass panel 900 wide. That leaves an opening 700 and it looks great. I think a smaller opening, even with the bath positioned as it is, would feel too small. However we do get lots of splash on the floor. It's ok but a less soggy mat would be better. I'm good at being awear of this. My wife however thinks we have a wet room. I think a 1100 screen would pretty much stop all splash (but would need a longer tray as the 700 opening would look a bit small) and also a wider tray would obviously help slightly as the shower rose would be a fraction further from the opening. I'll add a photo, but

excuse the mess! I still need to install the tiled bath and shower base panels

Hi, thanks for your reply. I would be great to see a photo too. We have a window as well, which is adding even more to the confusion. Does 800 tray suffice? I am considering going 900, but as you said, worried about it dominating the room and making it feel cramped. Size of whole room is 4.38 sq. m. (46.3 sq. foot) which has vanity, hanging toilet and a shower.

Hi I seem to have created another account whilst replying to you and my photos didn't attach? I'm a bit of a luddite. I'll try and get photos and measurements up later. In answer to your question, yes I think 800 wide tray is fine. I guess the longer the glass panel, the more enclosed it will feel but yes 800 is fine. If I was a really large person it might not feel so luxurious but in the uk 700 is standard external width for a bath and so showers over baths have even less width once a curtain hangs and bath tub thickness is taken into account.

HU, if you are using the App, it only allows one uploaded picture at a time, otherwise it just disappears. Very annoying, so upload one pic, then click on icon and upload the next etc. It’s a problem with App but they’re always buggy. The website does allow up to 4 pics, but again one at a time.
