Open plan house and I want to add colour but make it look adult

I will shortly decorate our new open plan house with large south facing sliding doors. It is light and airy and I don't want to lose this but not sure I should paint it white as I want to add some warmth but still keep it light. I have 6 recessed shelves with LED in the living area next to a modern gas fire. The shelves could be a vibrant colour. I am hoping to add vibrant colours (bluebellgrey appeals) yet make a comfortable adult home with a degree of sophistication and style. Any ideas ?
