Ideas for lawn please

I had builders in recently and they used part of the front lawn for storage and using building materials. It’s left a mess. Do I just try and reseed or should I make it into a feature area but how ? Any advice please. See photo .

No photo, but anyway, if you want to put back to lawn you will need to the area over well to a good depth as the builders will have destroyed the structure of the soil, they may have also contaminated the top layer so you may need to replace the top 12" will new top soil.

Compact the area in layers by just walking on your heels as you dig over otherwise the area will settle over time and you will have a hollow in your lawn.

Hi Danny, I think that overall, this rough shape that you have already established (an area for patio outside the house, a lawn with a path down the middle to a second - possibly seating? - area) looks good for a modern formal design for a garden of your shape. I don't really know the measurements, but from the pictures it seems that the patio area outside the house seems a bit on the small side. I would make it a bit bigger so that you can put some seating provision in it, maybe with a fire bowl (since as I understand it this is a shady area?). You also need space for planting to make this garden come alive. I would create planting areas around the seating areas and also along the lawn area. I didn't really understand where the change in level is (and hence where you want to put the retaining wall), but I would possibly plant along that retaining wall as well. I would go for an elegant planting scheme with grasses and discrete whites and maybe cool blues and possibly use some box balls or something similar to line the borders, so that the planting also has a modern look to go with the design. Awkward shaped garden section - ideas please!

We've had a section of our garden landscaped - staggered over several years as couldn't afford to do it all at once! The bit left over is currently a wasteland where the kids dig and was originally going to be lawn, but I've enjoyed gardening so much since we started that I'd rather put it to better use. There's also a really high drop where the wall is as we levelled a slope to get it flat, which really needs a low hedge or something along it for safety. It's a bit of a strange shape and established last year that veg growing in a triangular bed didn't work brilliantly! Does anyone have any inspired ideas for how to lay out this section with some low beds or sections divided by paths. I'd ideally try and plant some fruit bushes and would, have some veg and cut flower beds and maybe something to add a bit of height somewhere too. Excuse my rough drawing. Any advice much appreciated :-)

Hi Nathan, You have a nice leveled space there! And it also looks like you have a nice seating area on the bottom of the garden! In my opinion, your garden would benefit from widening the side borders a bit, which will create more space for a nice planting scheme and will make the garden seem wider. You could use these new wider borders to create more interesting shapes for your lawn (curved or perhaps squares turned 45 degrees?). I think that it would also benefit from having the seating area on the bottom conected to the patio. It is nice that you have these raised beds in front of the patio, but I think that it would benefit from having new paving laid (maybe some nice slabs of stone that you like, porcelain or some other of your preference). Your neighbours extension wall could be screened off with planting ( maybe some climbers growing in pots on the patio?).
