Long, dark bedroom hallway makeover.
Comments (39)Finally finished the hall and the transformation is complete. Kept the doors but painted the architrave and all other woodwork (Farrow & Ball Dimity Eggshell). Walls (F & B Joa's White Modern Emulsion) Carpet is sisal. Window shutters California Shutter Co. Wall up/down-lighters John Lewis, as are the ceramic radiator shelf lights, painted to match wall. LED Panel 'skylights' are magical. Wired to an external Dusk 2 Dawn sensor via a relay (To transpose output to Dawn 2 Dusk) they are activated by two occupancy sensors either end of the hallway and only operate during daylight hours, thus giving the very real effect that it's daylight flooding in. The wall lights are for night time and if it only needs to be subdued lighting, then the remote controlled shelf lights are used. The flickering flame wall sconces either side of the old loft door are for amusement at best, but look nice. Now to find some suitable wall decoration and also fit a curtain and tie-back at the mid-point. That will allow guests who use the end bedrooms some night time privacy when using the bathroom down there. Thanks to all you Houzzers for your input and support!...See Moredark hallway
Comments (22)Hi. I like colourhappys suggestion or embrace the dark. Have a look at farrow and ball railings or Hague blue, both work well in small rooms. I'd paint everything in the same colour up to the cornicing. Go for an off white ceiling, if you want to highlight the cornicing more, go a shade darker than the ceiling. Do you have lighting at the moment? A couple of pendant lights would be great, plus a couple of mirrors, maybe even opposite each other by that end door. Warm Metallics work well against these blue/greys so maybe mirror frames in bronze etc. You could also look into cleaning the floor, the colours look fantastic once cleaned (I'm clearly not suggesting your floor is dirty btw!)...See Moreideas for dark hall
Comments (26)Thanks :) and that’s the sort of thing I’ve been considering. For example I could make the pattern of frames and mounts part of the display by having them uniform and choosing images that are almost monochrome. There are lots of sky or sea scapes or portraits to choose from that are almost monochrome. The other thought was to buy a large size print and cut down to use just a portion of it so it’s “disguised” and just being used for its light and dark contrasts. But there are so many images that are really amazing that I wonder if a should just pick one for each of the walls. ?? Will let the thoughts percolate for a while I think. And when I fo something will post back. At one point I was thinking of trying to make my own Japanese Enso symbol. Part of its significance is practise making the drawer of it better I believe. Sometimes they draw it with a big calligraphy brush and I saw on a tv program a Japanese artist using a brush that was as big as a mop!...See MoreDark wood panelling hallway ideas
Comments (5)That is a lovely bit of panelling. I love it in its natural form in period homes like Hatfield House, but I do think painting it is a possible option to update a private home. When was your house built? The fireplace doesn’t look in keeping so maybe is a later addition? I think painting the beams white, or maybe taupe, will freshen it all up but still keeps the character. You may find then that the natural panelling doesn’t feel quite so dark....See MoreAlice E
