Should I tile my guest toilet?

We are thinking about tiling the walls in our separate toilet .. plain white tiles ( 300x600) same as the bathroom which is next to it. Planning to just tile the back wall , ie the wall behind the toilet which has a window above the toilet . Same tile as the skirting tile and paint the walls. Out tiler thinks it will look like we “ ran out of tiles” if we don’t tile the whole room . I think it would possibly be like a cold cell .. what do u think ?

No need to tile the lot.

I agree with you. Tile up to the window only and only the back wall if using white,
Do you have a feature tile in bathroom or is it fully tiled in white? You could use feature tile or run the floor tile up the wall instead. As a feature.

It does not require it but you would need to clean really well to get an even and clean covering. It usually needs more than one coat I find.. but you will need to see dependent on the colouring. It can be OK but only as a temporary fix and you need to take your time and do it properly as mistakes are really hard to change once you start painting - a run in it for example. It then also very noticeable. Personally if you hate it and it doesn't go with the new room your starting to create then I think go for it. It's a cost effective way to make you happy until you can change it later. I appreciate you can not see too well on the picture but these black tiles in this photo have been painted as the client was on a very tight budget and didn't want to rip the bright green ones off and start again! http://www.createperfect.co.uk/press?lightbox=dataItem-iqwcsy178 All the best, Gina

Paint it white. Start with watered down chalk paint, and build it up until you're happy with the depth of white. If you're really uncertain, leave it a day or two between coats so you can keep an eye on it when it's dry. It's only a small area, so it won't take long to paint, or scrub it off if you went too far! I'd also put a wooden shelf/mantleshelf along the top, in an aged oak or pine, which would look lovely with the blue walls (judging by the tester marks in your photo!), or black/grey to coordinate with any furniture pieces. Oh, and don't touch the metal bit, unless you're blacking it! :)

I took your advice @alyson38 , @Fran and @Raumtastik and here is how it looks so far. I havent finished painting walls which will be SW Alabaster. I am currently trying to decide if I should do open shelving on either side of the kitchen window (I put some blue painter's tape where it would go) or some blinds (in natural wood looking woven linen, bamboo). It needs something there as it looks kinna blah.

i wonder about the fashion to tile whole bathrooms and powder rooms..what do they expect to be happening in the room to need so much tiled walls and all that extra labour adds so much to the overall cost let alone the cost of the extra tiles and where better to add some adventurous colour or artwork ..the unfinished look can be overcome by adding metal tile edges or laying the tile in a pattern to frame the rear wall

A suggestion/idea

The majority of separate toilets tend to look ?

Dependant on floor tile colour.

Floor tiles up the rear wall to cornice , tile window reveals

Skirting tiles, floor tiles (if 300 x 300 half floor tile or 150 mm high

Separate toilets tend to be too small for more than one tile.

White tiles up rear wall would require dark walls

We re taking oak coloured vinyl floor thru to the toilet .. thanks for all the advice and pics.. love the feature tiles but don’t want to go to too much expense .. will just use our white wall tiles as they were left over from the bathroom ..

Paint is inexpensive, very effective and easy to change, even though you have left over tiles it will cost for labour to lay them, perhap you would be better keeping that small amount for any possible accidents to the tiles in the bathroom

Suggest you tile on all 3 walls however just up to under the window, then paint the rest. Then you have some more continuity.

From our recent projects, we can see that fewer people are tiling or using the same material all over the walls in bathrooms.

Your options would be:

- Add similar coloured tile to the paint in the bathroom to only add texture while keeping the colour scheme the same.

- Or to Contrast and make either the paint stand out or the tile, like some of the photos you've attached.

- However the above two options are not relevant if the rest of your bathrooms are all tiled and therefore the guest bathroom might stand out or look very different to the rest of your home. In this case, you should listen to your tilers' advice.

From projects, we have been part of, it is all about consistency that makes space/design look seamless.
