Dull London patio - suggestions very welcome!

Any ideas much appreciated. I own a basement flat in a Georgian property in London, built 1760. Leading out of my kitchen is a small patio, 5.5 feet wide, 14 feet in length, with a painted red floor and a (very) pale, dirty pink wall facing it. I am desperate to make it more interesting, particularly the facing dark pinkish wall, which is VERY dark under steps leading out to a wonderful garden, complete with roses, acers and camellias.

I have tried to make the area, which is lit up at night, more attractive with an Acer Sangokaku plant (right hand side), plus a couple of chairs and the odd extra plant. The dark pink wall, abutted by French windows leading to a small bedroom, has potential: a mural on the facing wall. Some modern wood panelling. Mirrors? Lights? Ceramics? A more dramatic colour scheme? It gets very little light!

I have lived here for nine years and never have had the time to direct energy at this - until now. Any thoughts/ideas would be SO appreciated.

what is your interior decorating style?

also, could you post a photo from above looking down into the patio well? ... and maybe of the exterior of your building as well.

I would lighten up the floor color and on the pink wall perhaps mirrors or a very reflective tile, a small bistro table would also be nice

I would agree with pannacotta and take out the blue spruce. I would then get someone in to take everything out - the shed, the pond, the narrow path, the lawn, the odd sleeper demarcation across the garden and the gravel. You will then have a clearer picture of your space. With the conifer removed there will be a large space at the far end of the garden, and it will no longer suck the water from the garden. Perhaps include some pleached hornbeam trees on the right and at the far end to make the garden feel more private, yet allow filtered light in to your garden. You have a wall at the far end, which is a great feature. It looks like the entire garden is enclosed, which is great from a safety point of view for the children. A garden building/office is a great addition, but it can become a storage place. Before buying one, really way up the pros and cons of having one. I am designing a family garden at the moment with a garden office towards the rear, but the father works from home and really needs his own space - however, it will double up as a TV room/den for the kids at night. Work out the actual size of building you actually need, rather than just putting one in to fill the space. If the orientation is correct the right hand side gets most sun. I would, as suggested put pleached hornbeam trees along the run, and have a path to one side, along this run, perhaps with a dog-leg at the far end. The path would be in the sun most of the day and would stay clearer from moss, etc. You could incorporate an off-set pergola above a section of the path perhaps positioned towards the centre of the length of the path and climb evergreen clematis or hydrangea petiolaris - this will also assist with blocking out the building behind when seated lower and closer to the house. Perhaps split the garden then in to 3 zones: zone 1 close to the house becomes a paved seating/entertaining space; zone 2 is the centre of the garden, which would be the children's turfed play area, and then zone 3 at the far end either becomes a building or a hidden seated area for grown-ups with well-designed planting around it and a pergola attached to the wall to offer privacy and shade. You could even have a long table and benches for al-fresco dining, under a canopy of sweet smelling jasmine and roses. With good lighting, this space could be an enticing area. The Edwardian/Victorian façade of the house makes me think of a family cottage garden with a contemporary twist (with veggies and cut flowers grown together). Flowering shrubs, bulbs and perennials will help to soften the walls (but remember, the walls can be a great feature in themselves). This may sound like a lot of upkeep, but with the right choice of plants you only need to spend c. 1 hour a week to keep on top of things (a little more in the winter to tidy things up (but not too tidy, i.e. leave flower seedheads and grasses for winter interest)). But remember to keep planting close to the house low with the line of sight from indoors to outdoors, so that you can keep an eye on the children. This is a great space to have. Have fun and enjoy it.

Thanks so much folks! There are some really awesome ideas in here that we hadnt reconsidered ! We aren't keen on a Murphy bed because of the size of them which usually makes existing rooms smaller so we'd keep a sofa bed instead if we couldn't make a genuine second bedroom area but having seen some of the designs for opening it up and creating a second bed at the back I think I may revisit the budged and see if it can stretch more because having a second room would be great and add a ton of value so may well be worth the added expense. Thanks again what a creative bunch - keep ideas coming if you think of any more! Will update if/when we decide on a layout too

Looks like a good quality job. I like the steps and the garden office. It does feel rather 'linear' to me though. All straight lines and angles, which seem to produce a somewhat harsh look, not helped by the formal style planting. However, if the client is happy, It's a successful make-over.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. However, I realise that I didn't really explain the situation very well. Firstly, the painted trellis is definitely for the bonfire, and the ancient tubs will be re-purposed in some other area of the garden. Old moss-covered stone walls are indeed lovely - however, we have half-an-acre of garden, totally surrounded by mossy stone wall, and this particular corner really needs something to brighten it - not only in the flower-growing season, but throughout the greyer winter months. (it does look slightly better in summer, with tubs of various flowers) Moss can be very attractive - and obviously environmentally beneficial - but we have enough of it here to reinvigorate half of the county, can probably afford to sacrifice 2 or 3 square yards! The view from all our windows is almost totally green (farmland + forestry) or grey (granite) We've lived here for 35 years, are keen gardeners, and have tried numerous things to enliven this small area directly outside the kitchen, but so far no wildly successful solution, I'm afraid. I had been hoping for some more radical suggestions, possibly some sort of screening or build-around? I also hope to replace some of the gravel with irregular slabs. Really sorry if this sounds ungrateful for the above suggestions - my fault for not explaining in more detail!

Thanks Brenda for your interest. My interior design style is fairly minimal: slightly bauhuaus/retro with an emphasis on warmth and textiles. Not overly clinical. Plenty of books. Stainless steel kitchen with rubber floors in the kitchen and bathroom, coir seagrass in all other rooms. Quite a big apartment. I'm attaching some more snaps. This time, facing into the kitchen from the horrible 'dead' pink wall!
