Kitchen Extension-Layout Options and advise

Hi All,
I am planning rear and side extension to plan new kitchen and family room.
I am in dilemma if I should opt for additional room as in option-1 with Kitchen towards the garden or if I should opt for Option-2 where Kitchen and diner are away from the garden and I get more grand open space but I lose one room.
Any advise, pics of similar project would help. The sketch is done by only myself and I am yet to get Architect options..

Comments (6)I like Option 2 honestly. Obviously you are finding it hard to visalize what the space will look like but honestly that is a huge space so I would recommend putting in the utility considering what you gain from it. You gain a space where you can block out the sound of the washing machine- who wants that sound when your eating dinner? Also washing is unsightly- do you wants piles of clothes in your nice brand spanking new kitchen? In terms of the corridor you are going to have lots of light coming through from the new extension. When you enter the front door and can see straight through to the garden spaces feel much bigger than they actually are anyway. Also who says it has to be boring. Have some fun wallpaper or colourful art hanging. Also if you want to make something more spacious use sliding doors for utility and wc. Less items infringing on corridor space. And lastly, the reception is purely personal preference based upon how your family function. Personally I prefer two rooms. Allows for more space to get away from the open plan area. Comments (5)So many lost opportunities: Click on the image to expand 1) the long extension is blocked by the office. Far more dramatic if the full length and outlook and light at both ends can be used. 2) The kitchen is contrived but doesn't work, as you say. 3) A powerful symmetry can be gained in all aspects of the kitchen/dining/slobbing seating area. 4) space for a big bookshelf/tv wall in the casual seating area 5) space for coat hanging in the hall and utility (none in the original) 6) Kitchen and dining are interchangeable depending on preference. 7) a less space wasting office with direct access to the garden. Could alternatively be a kids room for the avalanche of plastic. 8) Significantly less expensive because the wall is kept, but the chimney is removed in this floor. 9) I would use sliding doors at the ends. Minimal frame type with just 2 panels. Bi folds are really ugly when closed (most of the time). 10) you could extend the kitchen worktop outside as an outdoor kitchen. Comments (7)We have the exact same layout and decided not to extend the living area. There already was a mudroom/utility extension. We did remove the reception-dining wall and chimneys, removed the kitchen-dining wall. Our fridge freezer and oven are in the mudroom. And I cut a rectangle out of the toilet-kitchen wall to make room for a small toilet washbasin, the hole is patched with plywood and tiled on the kitchen side. Comments (0)We are in the process of extending (a joint project with our neighbours to gain an extension to the front box room, then along the ground floor across the front and down the side of the house). We're having some last-minute layout dilemmas, the floor space isn't the biggest, but we will gain some essentials from it (bigger kitchen, downstairs shower/toilet, office space, porch and the bigger box room upstairs). Our shower room is going to be fairly slim (worked out as 900x2900mm at the minute). This also creates a slim corridor space beside that leading to an office which I've bumped along a bit to give some more space (sacrificing utility space at the other end, when you compare my Ikea layout with original drawings). The other option is to access the office from the lounge, meaning we could lose the corridor altogether and widen the shower room, but that would make the office open to noise from the lounge and I think it's a weird place to add a door. We're also struggling with options for the laundry/utility space too and whether to just include it as an extension to the kitchen. I've added some screenshots and links to an Ikea planner I used to map the ground floor out completely (ignore the colour and the basic mapping of furniture etc. it also doesn't include the pitched roof and Velux windows). Any input would be appreciated, I'm just looking for layout ideas and tips for anyone that has similar sizing/spacing set-ups. Thanks.
