Rough cost to convert this front garden into a driveway

Hi,

I am looking at a prospective property and am trying to roughly itemize the cost of renovation as I've always wanted a fixer upper.

The front garden on this semi detached property in East London is roughly 6m wide and 4.5m deep so 27 square meters which I believe will be enough for our two cars.

As you can see in the pictures, there is a brick wall, hedges and a tree that will all need to be removed. The council will also need to be contacted to get the kerb dropped.

My question is, roughly what kinda price am I looking at, both best case and worst case, for doing all this work and essentially turning picture A into Picture B.

I’m no expert so have no idea of cost and understand you want parking space but I’m secretly hoping you will be able to reserve some space for greenery. 🌿🌱🥀

Take the tree out yes, keep some green if you can though.

Your very welcome. I am sure you can turn your garden around with that sort of budget. Simple things like painting the existing fence will have a great effect with little outlay. Also, I think someone else has suggested combining gravel with artificial turf- this is a great idea. Perhaps you could run a path of artificial turf along the side passage then a narrow section in the garden with gravelled and planted areas. Reclaimed scaffold boards make nice decking if you can get hold of any. Salvage yards often have them ~£15 for a 3m length, I think it normally works out at about £15 per sqm for the planks. You could leave them bare for a quirky rustic look or stain them grey for a modern feel. Good luck with the garden!

Hi I would look to raise the lawn up level with the path to the front door by building a smart brick retaining wall. You could then plant a low ish hedge along the top to provide further privacy but keep it to no more than 4/5 ft to prevent it overpowering the space and blocking light. For that reason I'd avoid conifers of any sort as they are thugs and take a lot of managing. By raising the lawn from pavement level it will give you some privacy anyway. It'd be nice to loose the concrete kerb along the side of the drive too so it doesn't feel and look like the road! Perhaps continue the brick round till it feathers out to meet the path to the door? A feature tree of small to medium size would also be a nice addition to the lawn. Look for one with dual seasonal interest ie. Spring flower and Autumn colour such as Amelanchier or some of the flowering cherries. Good luck Neil

Traditionally, drives have gone in a straight line up to the house, which was fine when the family only owned one car but since then many of us have two and it is a pain having to move cars around. With this in mind, I suggested to my husband to curve a new driveway around under the bay window, a bit like a tree trunk with a branch. Mindful of not totally tarmacing, we have been able to keep grass areas on both sides. My husband took some convincing, mindful of extra cost and he being the man, that this was his domain but it works we are very pleased with the result.

Lovely house, lovely front garden! Bit of a shame to have to create a parking space, but I appreciate your preferences. I'm no expert but can only try to encourage you to have as much green and planting area as possible. :) Next door may be a good example of how not to do it.

I recently had an old deck removed in my back garden and replaced it with paving. The area was quite small , 11 square metres. It took 8 days in total to complete and the cost was £2520. Materials were £920 and Labour was £1600 for one builder and one labourer.
