utilising areas with best and least light

Design dilemma: We have 2 options for kitchen and dining in our 1930s semi detached house.

Option 1: A big kitchen in the rear extension with South facing windows and dining in the least lit.

Option 2: We can have a small kitchen in the least lit and have a diner lounge in the extension.

What would you do?

Option 1. Kitchens need more light then dining area. Put a nice light over dining table.

Hello, I think the comments above are all good points to consider. I find bar stools are breakfast bars are one of those things that seem like a good idea but will be under used. I have a preschooler and a toddler and I would suggest that a good family dining space in the kitchen will be a lot more used than an area with high stools. A separate dining room does seem like a nice idea but I think it is probably a luxury that doesn't make sense with the space you have. Try to really imagine how you use the space and keep a track of where you spend time now. It would probably be worth consulting an interior designer or kitchen designer to get some ideas. It doesn't always cost as much as you might think and can save you making decisions you might regret. Good luck with the project, it looks really exciting.

I think all of them could work, definitely depends on what else you will be doing with the space and how important the TV selection is to you (I do really like the Samsung one and agree it’s far better than the black boxy look you get with a standard TV). Also, you can achieve the Philips TV effect with other products by Govee and even a one from Philips themselves (Hue HDMI Box - albeit expensive). Or if you are ok to settle on lights that are a static colour there are hundreds of options on Amazon or eBay. Whats the rest of the room going to look like as that might help in making a final decision?

Thanks Katie, this looks great! The view is lovely I can definately see why you have done it this way. I love the window too. Do you mind If I ask what the dimensions of the room are for reference? My only concern would be if we could get enough full height storage on the eaves wall behind the bed, I don't think our room will be as big as this. The reason we planning to go for lots of tall storage is so that we can store away all our clothes and any other bits away as we don't have much storage throughout the rest of the house. So storage is a big thing on this build. But orientating the bed in that way make loads of sense. Ideally I would be able to just let them build the main shell and then get up there and position a bed in various places. But I guess so much has to be determined before that stage so the wall lights, plug points etc... are all in the correct place. I think I might draw some options up in CAD and then start a new thread and see which people prefer and what they would do themselves. Thanks for your comments and pictures :)

We have an L shape with kitchen and dining in the most lit (extension) and sitting/tv area in the least lit (original back room).

Although the sitting area is in the darker bit, there’s still nice light options for sitting during the day as the breakfast bar is in the light area and we also have put in a window seat rather than having doors all the way across.

Depends on your lifestyle, if the kitchen is the hub of your home, option 1 without a doubt.

I just feel like all that beautiful afternoon/evening light and view of cherry tress is lost in the kitchen where I probably spend an hour or so cooking. A lounging and dining area there would probably be a better place to enjoy it and is where I would like to spend the time.

Also with the curries I make, and I cook a lot, I am drifting away from an open plan kitchen...in the opposite direction of all the Houzz kitchens.

Just having second thoughts about going from an airy well lit kitchen to an artificially lit one. Will still have a high window facing south.
