Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

skylights for a garage conversion to kitchen/living room

garage conversion TO KITCHEN/ LIVING ROOM with height of approx 7 feet. Thought some ceiling light would help give a sense of space.. Just need advice on recommended sizes..

Room is 4950 x 2420 ..

we are looking to do approx half kitchen half living area..

we thought to have 1 skylight in kitchen area..

topics for best describing post are flat roof lighting..

You need to be careful adding a separate kitchen and bathroom to a space as you will be liable for council tax on it as a separate dwelling.

Is your child/ren old enough to play unsupervised? Will the play room also be used as a guest room frequently? Are you planning on a shower cubicle or wet room? If yes, using your plan I'd do something like this. Personally I'd need a separate room for adults hence closing the front room off but you'd probably need a window by the dining table. The pillar could be used to disguise washing up on the island and you still get a view. I'd swap the utility and wc (may be easier with soil pipe) and stack the wm and td and use the cupboard for ironing board etc. The other side of the cupboard in the play room could be used for toys etc. Having said that I'm not terribly good at planning and it depends if you want a fully functioning utility room (As I literally just use mine for doing the washing!)

Hi Jonathan, sorry life got very busy there for a while! We actually already have glass doors opposite the front door into the kitchen and intend to add a sizeable rooflight in the study so perhaps we will be reasonably catered for in terms of light despite any porch addition. A fresh thought on layout came to but I've had zero time to get acquainted with floorplanner or an alternate piece of software to draw it out. I will endeavour to manage this soon. It basically involves reducing the size of the existing utility so the small hall becomes twice as wide. Then closing off the hallway at this end so this is in effect a galley off the kitchen with pantry style units leading to a door at the study end allowing ease of access from kitchen to garage conversion. Hard to explain fully and it's benefits as we see them without a drawing so I'll work on that!

Hi, The extension over the garage should be relatively straightforward in terms of layout but you would have to apply for planning permission. You would also need a structural engineer to check that the existing structure of the garage is sufficiently strong, or could be strengthened to support the new first floor. The first-floor layout I have shown mirrors the top of the stairs so that there are another 2 steps so that the first floor is all the same level. this has to be a small landing at the top of the stairs so i have used this area as a new bathroom and then the front makes the 3rd bedroom significantly bigger. the existing bathroom could be turned into a decent-sized bedroom by taking some of the room from bedroom 2. At the ground floor, the shower could be removed to leave just a W/C and allow easy access from the kitchen to the utility. I would also block up the door in the kitchen to give more space for units and worktops and possibly enlarge the island. Please let me know what you think?
