An opinion on F&B paints

I came across this article on F&B fans Facebook page and found it hilarious.

Anyone else find it funny? Does it ring a bell?
Should I reconsider using F&B paints on my kitchen upgrade project, saving a little fortune? Decisions, decisions ...

Don’t know if it’s a Micky take or he’s just a patronising attention seeker ? But both could be true ! Go with colours you like - it’s not tricky really!

Laurence used to create the most dreadful rooms in Changing Rooms and he made one customer cry with his awful gothic dining room, so I would take it all with a pinch of salt. Dreadfully snobby article. How dare he diss John Lewis! 😂

I would say you have 2 options: 1) paint as Pat says, but choose a nice dark matt colour, ( or I suppose White if that is you want, its a matter of personal preference), and handrail dyed and varnished MATT, or, stain / matt varnish the whole lot. Here, with discussion with client, and led by the client who wanted a low maintenance finish, the 300 yr old beams had been treated and left as natural, unfinished, and the new soft wood ( budget did not allow for oak or hardwood) was finished in stain and matt varnish - I thought it might not work, but the end result was pleasing to all and very very happy client. This expressed the new joiner from the older structural timber frame. What do you think?

I've never been a fan of dark walls, but I do think they can look stunning. However I have changed my mind now.! We sold my late mum's house last year - it was decorated to rent out in the usual cream walls, oak floor and beige neutral carpet. We noticed it was up for rent again (owner going abroad to work for a while) so ideal opportunity to have a nose online! Wow they had totally redecorated it in a mid century style. Walls were a mix of white and very dark grey throughout with trendy 60's style artwork. The main bedroom was stunning in dark grey walls and white bedding. It's not something I would have ever done, or even had the imagination to do, yet it looks fabulous. I would therefore say go for it, if you're a little wary just do a feature wall in the dark colour and do the rest white. Good luck!

Hi Helen, it's all about the undertones. All colours have a 'bias' towards one colour, for example Cornforth White has a blue (cool bias), Bone has a green bias, Joa's white has a red (warm) bias etc. As long as you choose colours that have the same bias you should be ok. The other important factor is the aspect of the room. If a room is gloomy, you need to be really careful about what colour neutral you choose, avoiding ones with a blue bias as they will feel cold.

Hi! I would use a Color Muse to measure the colour attributes of your flagged floor and then choose a colour, which relates to the hue family to which the flooring belongs. Then all you need decide, is whether you prefer the wall colour to be darker or lighter, but knowing that it will coordinate with the flagged floor.

I agree with Sonia that he used to make the most awful choices. I wouldn’t let him in my house!

Personally I would not pay for the F&B name. I have my preferred manufacturer and it’s not them. However I do like their choice of paint names. They’re so easy to remember.

He's just being a flouncy provocateur. He has his own brand which is very maximalist, chinoiserie, colourful, glamour which is his trademark (and he's welcome to it). But to criticise others for preferring a more understated pared back look is a bit odd, given that he whitewashed his blinged up Austin Powersesque home before flogging it. Each to their own....

I do like some of the F&B colours (we've just had our kitchen repainted in some of their shades), but my decorator says that it's not worth paying the extra as the paint is no better quality than trade paint, so he always colour matches it (unless clients insist he uses F&B). Other "premium" paints are better quality, such as Little Greene. Some people prefer more muted shades, some prefer something more colourful - neither is right or wrong, it's down to personal preference.

Anyone who has ever noticed LLB tat discarded in the bargain bin of a DIY store knows his taste level is far less popular than Farrow and Ball

It’s a pity Houzz doesn’t have laughing emojis.
I just didn’t know enough about paints and brands before, only Dulux and F&B.

Also I knew LLB by his colourful attire, as a TV judge for something like Designer challenge and ranges of John Lewis china.
High time to look into Little Greene for a change 🤔
