What are the stone steps made of?

The steps in front if the house look really nice. What kind of material is it?

Thank you for your question. The stairs are granite and the cheek wall is textured concrete.

Awkward bottom step

Looking at the picture it appears that the whole staircase and wall are both skewed thus causing the very awkward angles involved. Clearly a major rebuild would be the perfect answer but I have a simple solution that will cost little and might be a temporary fix. Simply make the bottom step into a two thirds wide step (measured across the stair width) giving the full tread depth but only 66% of the width. To reduce the step height, make it two steps but you would need to be careful not to create a trip hazard from the downstairs doorway. You might consider adding a short extra handrail on the stair wall to the left looking up the flight. In fact just this week I saw a house with a very steep loft conversion staircase that had the full flight done in half steps so that you climbed each with a left/right/left/right step movement and it was called a "Hit and miss" staircase. I am not saying it looked a good idea as regards safety etc. but at least it got a staircase into a position where a conventional design would be even worse! As I said....a full rebuild is the best solution but the above might help short term and be better than trying to cope with that very narrow/disappearing first tread.

If you are going for a step then I think there would need to be an obvious difference between the two levels. Would just one step be an obvious separation between the two rooms? Could it be increased or would this be too expensive in terms of digging out? I love the steppes areas in a large open plan room which gives a nice separation. However if it's not too obvious a difference then keep to one level and just use rugs or see through wall features/storage to separate them.

When brick and plaster gets wet once it draws salt into it and this means sometimes you can’t get rid of the problem. The solution is to hack off the plaster and replace it. However it is too early to go for that- I would wait and see. It may dry out well in which case I would then paint it with an oil based paint designed to stop staining and then redecorate.

Living in an older house - not one of the newer hermetically sealed boxes they build these days - made of natural stone, with wooden framed windows (no trickle vents) and mostly wooden external doors, all we need to do to ventilate is open windows or doors - we have french doors on two rooms and panoramic doors in the kitchen/diner. Because the walls are thick Cotswold stone (2ft thick in places) and the roof is slate, we don't seem to get any condensation anywhere. We don't have a need for extractors, if we have to use the tumble drier (condensing), we just open the window in the utility room. If it gets steamy in the kitchen, we put the extractor hood on or open a Velux or two. If any of the bathrooms get steamy, again, we open the windows. That said, our house is never "overheated" in the winter, we have wool carpets and mostly cotton curtains, so we never get "stuffy" with moist trapped air in the house.
