What sizes of boards did you use for the railing? I love the variation

I am wanting to replicate this railing on my front porch this weekend so I was just interested in knowing the sizes of boards used. I love that it is different from regular spindles and offers more privacy as well. Thank you!

Thanks for your interest and kind words regarding our project. Very much appreciated!

The posts are 6" x 6", and the caprail that sits on top of the posts is 2" x 8". The balusters are a combination of 2" x 8" and 2" x 6", with the narrowest balusters being made on site by ripping a 2" x 6" in half. The spacing between balusters is just under 4". The top of the caprail is 36" above the deck boards. All of the post/caprail/baluster material is redwood.

Thank you so much for your quick and thorough reply. That should be all the info my husband needs to replicate this look for our porch. I have scoured thousands of photos online, but we didn't 100% agree on a style until I saw your photo! I appreciate you taking the time to reply. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

Hi both, thank you for replying. Minnie - I love that pale grey, don't suppose you know what it is?? I have some grey undercoat which is dark so I could always try that on a test patch to get an idea although I think paler would work best in this hall. It's south facing so gets sun in the morning but is fairly dark in the avo. Yes I plan on hanging some pictures to balance out the large expanse of wall up the stairs as it looks too bare now. Re the dado - I was only going to run it up the stairs really and not around the rest of the hall, although this might be a no no. It was mainly to break it up and give people something to hold/touch when walking down the stairs

Hi Jackie, Here is a closeup photo of the wall upstairs with the pictures illuminated with a spotlight in the ceiling. As our hallway is very small, it's hard to get a good zoomed out photo, but I'll put one up when I get a chance. The house is still a work in progress, but downstairs we are going to build a recess into the wall and sit an orange glass vase in it. This contrasts really well against the Railings.... Lighting wise, I assume that you have an attic above the hall. Is it boarded or do you have access to the ceiling and wiring still? If this is the case, you can get an electrician to fit spots for you after decorating is complete if you need a bit more light in there. Do you get much natural light into the hall? I can see in your photo that the front door is solid, is there a window next to it? Our front door is partially glazed and faces West. We get the evening sun through the door and it changes the Railings colour from dark grey to a much lighter Bluey green grey : ) Thanks, Peter

CC - the bottom newel post had to be replaced as it was wonky and couldn't be sanded down to get rid of the wire brush edging. Also, it was pine and I wanted to have it stained to match the original oak railing. Unfortunately, the original handrail wasn't straight and had a big knot in the middle so it was impossible to fit the new spindles/balusters. Both bottom newel post and cap and handrail are new oak. I will have them stained with an Osmo terra or a similar shade of stain, black brown without any orange or terracotta undertones.

I'm a big fan of using bold colour on walls so if I'd seen this post last year before you'd chosen the floor tile I would have said to go for your original blue idea. However, I think the lovely tile you've chosen has all the colour you need. In this case I'd keep the walls a simple off white all over as suggested above and pick out the colour in your woodwork, e.g. the front door, skirting and architraves (but not the dado rail which should be the same colour as the walls). Some painted furniture, like a console table, and artwork that reflect some of the floor colours will then pull the whole scheme together.
