narrow hallway in Victorian house advice

Hi, looking to redecorate our narrow Victorian hallway. I was thinking of something with a border but the hallway is only 92cm wide and concerned any border is going to take up too much space and make it feel narrower. I have bought some samples and mapped out tile sizes. Has anyone got any experience with their own narrow hallways? I’m leaning towards going without a border as in 4th picture, but not sure how that would look on the front door steps, or whether should do something different here. Looking for any advice or experience from people with equally narrow hallways! Thanks

I think the last image may narrow it further due to the black and white contrast?

This is one similar to the 3rd pic where the black and white are mixed upwhich i think makes it feels wider? The dark colour on the ceiling (and door) and low light may also help to make it feel wider?

I don’t know where you are based or what your budget is, however have you considered small individual reproduction tiles as opposed to the large tile that you are looking at? It gives you lots more options! We used Alternative Tiles in Derby when we re-tiled our Victorian porch - it’s their area of specialism (they work nationally too). We gave them a couple of photos and dimensions and they then did several designs on the computer that they emailed across. We were able to go back and forth until we got the design for us. We then bought the tiles and used an independent tiler who only works with those tiles. http://www.alternativetiles.co.uk/victorian_floors.html. It’s not that cheap though because it’s labour intensive - but they look amazing and can be made completely bespoke to you.

Hello, I would definitely paint the woodwork white rather than leave it cream. It really will lighten it up and help to make it feel fresh and new. You also must change the light fitting. Your hallway is quite narrow and looks quite dark; try to find a fitting that illuminates and is brighter. It might be worth experimenting with different bulbs too. Blue and gold go great together. I agree with chotston01 that wallpaper and paint don't always go together. Have you looked at a gold paint for above the rail? I also think its a huge change when all your other rooms are very light. You might find that its simply too dark for you once you live with it for a while - but then its easy to paint the smaller area with a lighter blue - like the duck egg. Ill be interested to see the finished hallway. Good luck.

I would never expect a downstairs WC in a 2 bed house to be honest. It's very rare to find this so it really depends if it's something you really want? Do you have space under the stairs to put one? Utility space could be fitted in but it doesn't have to be big. There are some very clever concealed cupboards that you could have inbuilt into the kitchen side that could house the washer/dryer with hanging space for clothes etc and space for your other bits without it blocking off the end of your kitchen. We were going to build a large utility room off our new kitchen but then Jonathon mentioned about the space it's taking up in the garden, so we have trimmed it down and we have moved the kitchen and are now using some of our bathroom for it. It will only be narrow but it's sufficient.

Hi! The width of the house is 3.9m so quite narrow and at the back if the house will be kitchen/diner with basement. We don't have a front garden really as it's a townhouse that sits on the pavement! So reinstalling the hallway would be beneficial. But I am thinking that the wall could be partial glass......Your opinion would be so welcome! Thank you

Again putting in a door isn’t cheap but can easily be done (note the very important lintel above the door in your photo). However in this instance I would be inclined to put the door in the rear wall of your proposed extension immediately opposite the existing external double doors in your dining. This would ensure free uninterrupted flow through the house and would bring in light and offer views out from the dining room. It would also retain the twin aspect front to rear. If they are in good condition then you could relocate these doors to this new location in the proposed extension. This would save funds forking out on opening up a doorway in your existing house wall and purchasing new doors. You could also move the lovely light above the door or retain it in its current location. I wouldn’t put internal door between the new kitchen and dining. Leave it open. Taking onboard what Neasa suggested. Have you considered how much use you would get from your dining room? It is a big chunk of the ground floor space. Could you make do with the existing small kitchen but reorientate it by blocking off the door into the hall and flipping the U shaped kitchen 90 degrees. This would allow a kitchen island or peninsula between your existing kitchen and proposed extension. The existing dining could become a snug, office, library, music room, whatever takes your fancy. Do you have space to fit a utility in the hall up against what was a door into the kitchen but is now a proposed wall? It doesn’t appear to be too long a stretch to take the waste out to the drains.

Budget for tiles is about £500, had a few quote from bespoke places and it came in at over £1k so out of budget unfortunately:(

Agree with minnie101. Also think it’s worth doing something that is authentic for your period home.
