The ceilings are a knockdown texture while all of the walls are smooth.

Hi Wayne, Do you still need some lighting advice? The sconce would be a good idea for when watching T.V, as it will create a relaxed mood. I would advice to keep the existing ceiling lighting as an alternative, with a separate switch, due to the lack of light the sconce can provide. You could, perhaps, replace the ceiling lighting with similar style to the sconce? What particular style do you like? Pendant lighting could go very well in your study/snug room. Also, an image of the sconce would help. I would be happy to help you.

if you want to create a mood, atmosphere or have a decorative theme in mind - you cannot just ignore the ceiling. sure a white ceiling 'may' work, but you need to consider the room as a whole including the the 6th wall - the floor! we wanted a darker/cosier entrance to further enhance the low ceiling and contrast with the lighter/brighter kitchen, seen through the door. so painted it dark grey along with the joinery/skirtings and 'planted-on' beams for some extra texture/interest, which also helped to disguise the not so level plaster work!

well, this is an interesting situation that you have, especially because of the lenght of the room. Seen the options mentioned, I would say that it is possible to change the perception of the space, but not really hanging something on that sloping wall because it seems quite low. A large rug, moving the sofas a bit away from the wall to give more headroom, changing the paint colour, especially the orange which is very "energising", into white and the sloped part into a very very mild colour to avoid compromising the brightness of the room (ideally some light grey). Other possible solutions are: 1. some feature lighting (my favourite) to add extra touch of design and ambience if it's dimmable. This can give an accent of minimal, contemporary or industrial, depending on the selections; 2. gypsum moldings to define some "areas". These moldings can be plain and make some geometric pattern - more artsy- or baroque-ish if you want something more shabby chic. 3. glass. Glass increase the brightness, can be treated in a huge number of ways, from frosted to mirrored to acidated or chemically aged. Can also be enclosed in moldings/frames to achieve some special style, or installed flush with the non-mirrored wall. 4. box part of it with joinery, to reduce the sense of slope, gain extra secret storage or achieve a functional wall. Some of these require a general redesign of the room, but are ideas that can work at different scales. Then little touches of character here and there, and it's going to be just adorable and 100% "you".

We have decided on Farrow and Ball Ammonite Grey, a pale but warm neutral grey. Thinking of painting the walls and ceilings the same colour for uniformity and for a contemporary feel? Ceilings are quite low so hoping it will make the room feel more spacious as no contrasting edges?
