well you certainly got my grey matter working on a sunday morning- i'm currently redesigning my own and a family members kitchen so have been full swing in this thought process for some time! I live in UK too so know how difficult it is to work in these spaces- (is the kitchen on side of house? is there garden space behind the cooker/hob wall?) Two questions though are necessary: 1 ) What are dimensions of room? (I'm guessing about 18ft long, by 9ft wide -measuring to the window sill- excluding the 1ft outer wall depth) 2 ) What is your budget? Enough to only stretch to replacing kitchen units? or a whole remodel- moving gas pipe/sink position etc. Are you keeping the floor? I've attached two room designs that I think would work well (assuming you have 9-10ft width to play with). Both I think will give a better flow to the room, and allow you to add the wow factor. Think about how you want to use the space not just the aesthetic look. The first design swaps the layout, and the second- you can have the sink and hob in the island. The best way to keep costs down would be to spend money on the island/kitchen cabinetry and granite/concrete worktop- but use full height MODULAR wall cabinet shelving (any joiner could do, or buy standard shelves/open cabinetry from ikea or affordable places like this)- to keep costs down and open shelving would suit your industrial style too. Interestingly you mention its a 1930s house- are there art deco features in your house? Both industrial and art deco styles have things in common- monochrome colour palette, reflective surfaces (mirrors/stainless steel), architectural elements (strong straight lines/grids- consider crittal windows?? perfect for both designs) and grey would suit both. If you want more industrial style- consider exposed brickwork also. If you can't afford bifold doors- consider French doors and full height window panels either side to give the same effect On reflection- I realise Jo DP and I seem to be on similar lines of thought! So funny! I'm planning to paint the bannister at the new house (TNH) black and am veering towards painting the treads and risers black too... I've been searching for images of black staircases on Houzz and putting them in my entrance hall ideabook. They are few and far between. In your case, I think, with your white walls, maybe the stairs white and the bannister black? (Assuming the white walls continue up the stair walls enabling the b/w contrast.) You've already put black firmly into the equation, adding some more may give more reason for the black rad cab. In my case, there is a very off-centre radiator that could so very easily have been directly opposite the front door in TNH which is rather annoying as it stuffs up the focal point. We are leaving here with every radiator covered with a cabinet - and going to TNH that has loads of radiators ...but no cabinets! Yes, the work ahead is daunting - especially since the area of Ireland we're going to is very basic and not full of DIY resources, etc. I keep thinking I'll paint TNH white - to make things simpler(!) But try as I may colour keeps wandering through my mind! Lovely to be in touch again!

Hello Heidi, Firstly it's a great room and lots of potential here. You could paint the feature wall with the fireplace a slightly darker shade of something that compliments the sofas.. In this way you instantly create a focus for the room and the fireplace does just that. I'd like to suggest that you place the sofa in line with the fireplace. Then 1 armchair I would angle to the left of the fireplace if you're looking at it. The book case is a reach away when wanting to read but I'd turn it round to frame the doors.. It might be a nice idea to actually move the other bookcase over to place on the other side... ie where the chest of drawers is.. So they both frame the doors... Paint the mirror frame and hang this... Keep some space free on the mantle as this gives the fire room to become a bit more expansive... Why not place the chest of drawers to the left of the fireplace behind the armchair... You can house toys and things here. It's both elegant and a good way to frame the fireplace as you don't have a chimney breast.. On the other find a low side table or a low cabinet.. You could house the television on this pretty much as it is currently.. Keep drinks in the cabinet or something, so they have functions and multiple uses.. Differing heights adds to interest here and it could be good to hang that 1 picture on the rear of the sofa wall with the others... Then there is a bit of room for the little one's to play as you can place the little white table and chairs near the window where it's warm with the rad. Find a nice lampshade for the central light and then place the table lamp close to the sofa.. possibly one with the armchair.. So you have pools of light in different areas and the room is ambient. You may find you do without the central light all together.. So really the key here is that I don't think you need to buy anything else and indeed I feel it would spoil the flow to add more seating.... Scatter the cushions so they are fewer, one or two at 1 end and 1 or two on the armchair.... maybe make a seating pile for the little ones with any left over.. : ))

Why don't you start putting together an ideabook on houzz, save all the pictures you like and annotate what in particular you like about each one as it will help you (and others) in terms of decor and then you can make a design that you work towards over time. If you're getting rid of the fire then I would probably hang the tv on the chimney breast to save space. There are lots of ways to make sure it doesn't become the focal point. As a short term solution though will the tv fit on the wooden stand in the alcove? Will the velvet sofa also fit in room 1? If so, what way does the room face in terms of paint colour? Longer term maybe you could build out the cupboard and chimney slightly so as to recess the tv and cover the pipes? For room 2 personally I'd use this for dining. Can you have a banquette seat and pedestal table on the wall where the buggy is? Is there room for your daughters big toys to go elsewhere or not? I'm just wondering if you could use this as combined dining and play? (You also get a comfier seat with the banquette as presumably she's not old enough to play on her own). Rugs, lamps, textures, plants etc will all make it feel more homely. Maybe if you give an initial budget for stage 1 people can give ideas?
