Skylight location decision

Hi,

We are currently planning our kitchen diner extension.

We will be adding 2 skylights (2000 x 1000mm). 1 in the kictchen, lengthways just off of the edge of the island which will be a seating end of the island. Then the 2nd in the diner which opens up ono patio/garden.

You can see in the plan that currently the lantern in the diner is widthways and we can not decide if this will work best, or if it should be changed to lengthways. The diner is 3600 long by 3350 wide so almost square, we plan to have a 6-8 seater dining table in the room.

Any advice would be very welcome for this indecisive couple.

Having had another look at roof lanterns, we've decided we prefer the look of flat glass windows. Just a personal preference that it's nice to have something with a clear view of the sky and no frame. Love the look of your kitchen Jayne Forrest so thanks for sharing. by the look of it you would have a large opening (bifold) in a rear and on a top of that you would have a kitchen window. i would say take it in consideration what type of lighting you would have for example if you have spot lights you would end up better with a windows away from the kitchen area and would need to make sure (if you have a flat roof what i assume) you leave enough ceiling area for a rest of a lighting to be installed. in my point of view you would end up better if you have 2 larger sized windows in the rest of a 2/3 of of the extension as kitchen is not counting as part of the area just as units are eating the space so you would measure at least 600mm away from the wall where the kitchen is positioned. if you have any island in the area where you have a skylights again is a question mark if you would like to have hanging pendant lights above the island. if so window cant be there either

Hi Sophie, I dont think for us it will be a problem. our attached neighbour is on the south side of us so we wouldn't be blocking their sun. And the neighbour on our detached side is set back from us, so our extension would end up level with them. I know there's the 45 degree rule with the right to light so maybe that was your issue? one of our neighbours has quite a large first floor extension but only on half the house (on the detached side) so we're not sure if we might have to do the same, that would still work for us to make a bigger bedroom and add an en-suite, we just wouldn't also extend the existing bathroom. Maybe your issue was due to the side you want to extend on, would it work for your layout to extend the other side, perhaps that would be allowed? Or maybe you could get round the 45 degree rule with a cleverly shaped extension? did you get an architect and put in for planning or didnt get that far?

Hello! You could opt out of a chimney breast but still have a fireplace wherever you like if you get a bio-ethanol fireplace installed.
